On my Future farm: Orpington Chickens

Eggs: Orpingtons are excellent layers of large, light to dark brown eggs, producing 200–250 eggs per year.

Orpingtons are known for being friendly, docile, and curious, and they are more likely to allow close contact than other chickens.

The ultimate mother hens!

In many flocks the orpington becomes the unofficial matron of the flock's fertilized eggs. These girls are maternal by nature and they love nothing more than crawling on top of a nest full of eggs to keep those tiny unborn babies warm.

A great addition to the flock!!

... Read moreI've had so many wonderful experiences with Orpington chickens, and if you're thinking about adding some to your backyard, you're in for a treat! One of the first things people notice is their incredible fluffiness and gentle demeanor. My chickens, like the speckled grey and white one I often see foraging, really showcase that full plumage and unique feathering that makes them so endearing. Their substantial size, often seen in black and white patterned birds, combined with their dense feathers, makes them quite cold-hardy, which is a huge plus for those of us in cooler climates! Beyond their charming looks and distinctive markings, Orpingtons truly shine in their temperament. They are incredibly docile and friendly, making them perfect for families, even with small children. I've found my Orpingtons are always curious, often following me around the yard, clucking softly. This friendly nature makes them excellent additions to a mixed flock. Unlike some more assertive breeds, Orpingtons typically integrate well, often becoming the peacemakers. I've noticed how their calm presence helps keep the overall dynamics of my flock harmonious. Speaking of flock dynamics, their reputation as 'ultimate mother hens' is absolutely spot-on! I’ve seen firsthand how dedicated and attentive they are. They possess strong maternal instincts, and if you're looking to hatch chicks naturally, an Orpington hen is your best bet! They are incredibly broody and will sit diligently on a nest of eggs, providing the perfect warmth and protection. My brown Orpington hen, with her robust and maternal qualities, has successfully raised several clutches, teaching her chicks everything they need to know. It’s truly heartwarming to watch. You might be wondering about the different colors an Orpington can come in – and there are so many beautiful options! While my flock includes classic buffs, I’ve also admired the stunning Splash Orpington with its unique mottled pattern, and the elegant Lavender Orpington, known for its beautiful soft blue-grey feathers. These specific color varieties bring even more visual appeal to the already delightful Orpington breed. Each one, whether it's a brown and black patterned or a light grey Orpington, shares that wonderful fluffy appearance and friendly disposition that we all love. And for those curious about egg production, my Orpingtons consistently deliver around 200-250 large, light to dark brown eggs each year. They are very reliable layers, even through some colder months, which is fantastic for keeping the fridge stocked. Compared to some other large breeds, like the Brahmas, Orpingtons are often lauded for their slightly higher egg output and their consistently calm and friendly nature, making them a superb choice for both eggs and companionship in any backyard setting. If you're seeking a chicken that is beautiful, productive, and a joy to be around, the Orpington is definitely a breed to consider!
