On my future farm: Favorelle Chickens

Faverolles hens are known for their egg production, laying up to 200 medium to large eggs per year. They can continue to lay eggs in the winter, when other birds stop. The eggs are usually tinted light brown or pinkish in color.

They are known for being vocal and can be relatively loud.

Faverolles are active but gentle. They are known to be submissive when kept with more assertive chicken breeds.

Plumage: Faverolles come in a variety of colors, including salmon, white, black, ermine, cuckoo, splash, and blue. Salmon Faverolles are the most common color.

... Read moreWhen I first started planning my ideal backyard farm, I knew I wanted chickens that were not only productive but also had a gentle nature and unique charm. That's when I discovered Faverolles chickens, and they've truly exceeded all my expectations! If you're considering adding these lovely birds to your flock, let me tell you why they've become my absolute favorites. One of the biggest reasons I chose Faverolles (and why many others do too!) is their incredible egg-laying ability, especially in colder weather. While most breeds slow down or stop laying eggs entirely during the winter, my Faverolles keep going! They provide me with a steady supply of medium to large eggs, averaging up to 200 per year. The eggs themselves are quite pretty, ranging from light brown to a delicate pinkish hue, and I've even seen some with a beautiful blue tint, adding a lovely variety to my egg basket. Knowing I can count on fresh eggs year-round, even when it's snowy outside, is a huge benefit. Beyond their productivity, Faverolles chickens are simply stunning to look at. Their distinctive appearance is a constant source of joy. They boast a fluffy beard and muffs that frame their faces, giving them a perpetually endearing look. Their feathered legs and feet are another unique trait, which not only adds to their charm but also provides some extra insulation in cooler climates. I have Salmon Faverolles, which are the most common and feature a beautiful brown and white plumage, but I've also admired the striking patterns of Cuckoo Faverolles, the elegant Ermine, and the serene Blue Faverolles from pictures. Each color variety has its own special beauty, and a multi-colored Faverolles rooster, with his vibrant plumage, is a true showstopper. Their temperament is another huge plus. Faverolles are known for being incredibly gentle and docile, making them perfect for families with children or for those who want a calm presence in their coop. They're not prone to aggression and tend to be quite submissive, so they generally get along well with other, more assertive chicken breeds in a mixed flock. While they can be vocal, I've found their chatter to be more like friendly communication rather than incessant noise, adding a lively soundtrack to my farm without being overwhelming. Caring for Faverolles is also relatively easy. Their hardiness, as evidenced by their ability to thrive even in snowy environments, means they're well-suited for various climates. Just ensure they have a dry, secure coop, and a good diet, and these lovely birds will reward you with their beauty, eggs, and gentle companionship. If you're looking for a chicken breed that combines excellent winter laying, a unique fluffy appearance, and a sweet personality, I wholeheartedly recommend Faverolles!
