My manticore character (he had wings they had just been ripped off lol)
Hey everyone! Seeing my Manticore OC always brings a smile to my face, and it got me thinking about just how much fun it is to create your own original characters. For those new to the art community, you might be wondering, 'What does it mean to make an OC?' Well, an OC is simply an 'Original Character' – a character you've totally created from scratch, from their appearance to their personality and backstory. It’s like being a storyteller and an artist all rolled into one! When I started on my Manticore character, like the one I shared, I really wanted to dive deep into creature design. If you're pondering 'how to draw a manticore,' it's less about following rigid rules and more about understanding their core features and then adding your unique twist. Think about what makes a manticore iconic: the lion's body, bat-like wings, and a scorpion's tail. But then, how can you make yours stand out? Maybe it's the texture of their fur, the glow in their eyes, or in my case, the story behind their missing wings! I usually start with some rough sketches, blocking out the main shapes, then refine the details. Don't be afraid to exaggerate features or give them scars that tell a story. One of the most exciting parts of character creation, for me, is exploring 'different art styles for characters.' My style often leans towards a more illustrative digital look, but for another OC, I might try a more painterly approach, a cartoonish vibe, or even a semi-realistic one. Each style can completely change how your character is perceived and the emotions they evoke. It’s a fantastic way to experiment and grow as an artist. Sometimes, I’ll even sketch the same character in two or three different styles just to see which one fits their personality best. Coming up with 'OC ideas' can sometimes feel daunting, but the key is inspiration! Look at myths, real animals, even everyday objects. For 'cute OCs' or any OC for that matter, think about what makes them endearing or interesting. Is it a unique color palette? A quirky habit? A powerful but gentle nature? My Manticore, despite being a mythical beast, has a bit of a tragic past with his wings, which adds a layer of depth. Don't be afraid to brainstorm unusual combinations or give your character a flaw – flaws often make them more relatable and lovable. Sharing your OCs, like I do on platforms like Lemon8, is also a great way to connect with other artists and get inspired by their 'original characters' and varied 'art styles'. Keep creating!
