Love like Jesus
John 13:34 (NIV):
“A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another.”
What does Jesus mean?
Jesus spoke these words to His disciples during the Last Supper, shortly before His crucifixion. He had just washed their feet, demonstrating humility and servant-hearted love.
The command is called “new” not because loving others was unheard of—the Old Testament already taught, “Love your neighbor as yourself” (Leviticus 19:18). It is new because:
• The standard is higher: Jesus says, “As I have loved you.” His love is sacrificial, unconditional, forgiving, and selfless. He would soon demonstrate this fully by giving His life on the cross.
• The example is personal: Instead of measuring love by how we love ourselves, believers are to model their love after Christ’s love.
Key lessons
• Love is a command, not just a feeling. Christians are called to choose actions that reflect kindness, patience, forgiveness, and service.
• Christ’s love is the model. We are to love others even when it is difficult, just as Jesus loved His disciples despite their weaknesses and failures.
• Love identifies Jesus’ followers. The very next verse (John 13:35) says:
“By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.”
Practical application
Living out John 13:34 means:
• Forgiving those who have wronged you.
• Serving others without expecting recognition.
• Showing compassion to those in need.
• Being patient and kind in relationships.
• Loving fellow believers in a way that reflects Christ’s grace.
In summary
John 13:34 is Jesus’ call to His followers to love one another with the same selfless, sacrificial love He showed them. This kind of love is meant to be the defining mark of a Christian’s life and witness to the world.#greaterlove #graceinrelationships #godcenteredlove
