As for soy wax, it's a fantastic choice for several reasons. It's a natural, renewable resource, which makes it a more eco-friendly option compared to paraffin wax. Soy candles also burn cleaner and longer, meaning less soot and more enjoyment from your beautifully crafted candle. Plus, they hold fragrance really well! If you're thinking about trying your hand at this, here's a more detailed guide to making your own soothing lavender soy candles. You'll need a few supplies to get started, but they're all pretty easy to find online or at craft stores. What You'll Need: Soy Wax Flakes: Look for natural soy wax specifically formulated for container candles. Lavender Essential Oil: Choose a high-quality, pure essential oil for the best scent throw. Candle Wicks: Pre-tabbed wicks are easiest for beginners. Make sure the size is appropriate for your container's diameter. Heat-Resistant Containers: Jars, tins, or ceramic pots work great. Pouring Pot/Double Boiler: Essential for safely melting wax. Thermometer: Crucial for knowing when to add your essential oils and when to pour. Wick Clips or Clothes Pins: To keep your wick centered. Stirring Utensil: A designated spoon or stick. Let's Make Some Candles! Prepare Your Containers: Make sure your containers are clean and dry. Secure your wicks to the bottom center of each container using a dab of hot glue or a wick sticker. Use wick clips or clothes pins across the top of the container to keep the wick perfectly upright and centered. Melt the Wax: Measure out your soy wax flakes. A good rule of thumb is that 1 pound of wax makes about 20 ounces of liquid wax. Use a double boiler method to gently melt the wax. Place your pouring pot with the wax flakes into a larger pot with about an inch or two of simmering water. Stir occasionally until the wax is fully melted and clear, reaching around 180-185°F (82-85°C). Add Lavender Oil: Once the wax is fully melted, remove it from the heat. Let it cool down to about 185°F (85°C) before adding your lavender essential oil. Adding it too hot can make the scent dissipate. For a strong scent, I usually use about 1 ounce of essential oil per pound of wax, but you can adjust this to your preference. Stir well for at least 2 minutes to ensure the oil is thoroughly mixed. Pour the Wax: Carefully pour the melted wax into your prepared containers, leaving about half an inch from the top. Try to pour slowly to avoid bubbles. Curing Time: This is the hardest part – waiting! Let your candles cool and cure for at least 24 hours, but ideally 3-5 days. This allows the wax crystals to fully form and the fragrance oil to bind properly, resulting in a much better scent throw when burned. Once fully cured, trim your wick to about ¼ inch before lighting. A Few Extra Tips for the Best Results: Test Wicks: If you're using a new container size, it's a good idea to test different wick sizes to ensure an even burn pool. Experiment with Scents: While lavender is amazing, don't be afraid to try other calming scents like chamomile, bergamot, or even blends!
