... Read moreTransitioning my furry friends to homemade dog food has been one of the best decisions I've made for their health and happiness! Like many of you, I was initially overwhelmed by all the options out there, but I wanted to ensure my Labrador and Husky (just like the ones in the picture!) were getting the best. That's why I started experimenting with recipes like the ground turkey and pumpkin one you just read about. Many people ask about adding rice to homemade dog food, and it's true, rice (especially brown rice) can be a great source of energy and fiber for dogs. While my go-to recipe focuses on hearty sweet potatoes and chickpeas for carbohydrates, if you're looking to include rice, you totally can! I'd recommend cooking about 2 cups of plain brown rice separately and mixing it in with the turkey and vegetable blend. It can be a fantastic addition, especially for more active dogs, or if you want to slightly adjust the texture. Just remember to cook it plain, without any seasonings. One thing I absolutely love about this recipe is its flexibility. My dogs thrive on the blend of ground turkey, shredded carrots, sweet potatoes, pumpkin, chickpeas, and okra. But if you're looking to mix things up or use what you have on hand, there are options! For instance, if you don't have okra, green beans or peas are excellent alternatives. Instead of just ground turkey, you could also use ground chicken or even incorporate some finely chopped leftover cooked turkey (make sure it's plain, no bones or skin seasoned with onions/garlic, which are toxic to dogs!). I've even swapped out some sweet potato for butternut squash before, and it works wonderfully. The key is to keep the balance of protein, healthy fats, and nutrient-dense vegetables. Ensuring a balanced diet is crucial. The eggshells are a fantastic natural calcium boost, as mentioned in the recipe! I also occasionally add a veterinarian-approved multivitamin specifically formulated for dogs, especially for my active Husky. When I make a big batch, I portion it out into daily servings and store them in airtight containers in the fridge for up to 3-4 days. For longer storage, this homemade feast freezes beautifully for up to a month! It's so convenient to just thaw a portion overnight and have a healthy meal ready. Seeing my dogs eagerly devour their meals, knowing every ingredient is wholesome and beneficial, is incredibly rewarding. It's a bit of effort, but totally worth it for their vibrant health and shiny coats. Plus, it's a great way to bond with them by preparing something special. Give this homemade dog food recipe with ground turkey a try – you might just find your dogs begging for more!
