The Millennial Way before AI

Growing up in the pre-AI era, I remember how research meant diving into physical resources like encyclopedias, books from the library, and newspaper clippings. Unlike today’s instant access to answers via ChatGPT or search engines, this process was time-consuming but profoundly rewarding. Using an encyclopedia often meant flipping through multiple volumes to gather all relevant information on a topic. This method forced deeper attention to detail and encouraged note-taking skills, which made the final paper thoroughly researched. Library visits were regular, with quiet hours spent hunting for specific books, often requesting materials through interlibrary loans when local copies weren’t available. Newspapers were valuable for current events and opinions, but accessing old articles took physical effort such as handling microfilm reels. This hands-on approach fostered patience and critical thinking, as one had to verify facts from several printed sources rather than relying on a single quick search online. From a personal perspective, this era nurtured strong organizational skills and an appreciation for source reliability. Each fact had to be double-checked with more than one book or article, and plagiarism was avoided naturally because information was not easily copied and pasted. While the digital age offers convenience, I believe the millennial way cultivated a resilience and scholarly discipline that many still value. It’s a reminder that while AI tools can enhance research, the foundational skills of careful reading, synthesis, and critical evaluation remain essential for producing thoughtful and original work today.
