Bottom watering 🪴

Okay, let's talk more about bottom watering because it's truly been a game-changer for my succulent collection! I know many of us, myself included, have accidentally overwatered or gotten water on delicate leaves, leading to sad, rotting plants. That's where bottom watering really shines. Beyond just keeping leaves dry (which is super important for plants like my precious String of Pearls or fuzzy ones like Bear Paws), this method encourages a much healthier root system. When you water from the top, water often just drains straight through, leaving some roots dry and others waterlogged. But by letting your succulents soak from the bottom, the plant literally sips up exactly what it needs. This means the entire root ball gets evenly hydrated, promoting stronger, deeper roots that can better anchor the plant and seek out nutrients. It's like giving them a slow, nourishing drink instead of a quick shower! So, how exactly do I do it? I find a tray or a larger container and fill it with about an inch or two of water. Then, I place my potted succulents (making sure they have drainage holes!) directly into the water. I usually let them sit for about 15-30 minutes. You'll notice the topsoil becoming damp as the water wicks its way up – that's your sign they've had enough. For my Hen and Chicks, which can be quite dense, I sometimes let them soak a little longer to ensure the water reaches all the way. The key is to never leave them sitting in standing water for extended periods after they've absorbed what they need, as this can still lead to root rot. Always let them drain thoroughly before returning them to their spot. Another fantastic benefit is that it helps prevent those annoying fungus gnats. Since the topsoil stays relatively dry, it's less inviting for these pests to lay their eggs. Plus, a well-hydrated plant with strong roots is generally more resilient to other common issues. While bottom watering is fantastic for most succulents, especially those with delicate leaves, compact growth, or fuzz, it's not strictly necessary for every single plant in your collection. Some hardier cacti or very large, established succulents might be fine with top watering if done carefully. However, I've found that for the majority of my collection, including my prized String of Pearls, Bear Paws, and even my Hen and Chicks, this method consistently leads to happier, perkier plants that just seem to thrive. It’s a bit more hands-on than a quick pour, but the results are absolutely worth it for long-term plant health. Give it a try, and you might just see your succulents flourish like never before!
