You’re watering wrong! Here’s the fix…

I picked up this pothos and she’s already destined for two homes 💚🪴 Pothos plants grow fast and root easily, so I’m dividing her into two: one to keep, one to gift. It’s my favorite way to share growth…literally.💧When I finished repotting, I gave them a good soak using the bottom watering method.

✨ Bottom watering method:

1️⃣ Fill a tub or sink with 1–2 inches of room-temperature water.

2️⃣ Set your plant’s pot directly in the water (make sure it has drainage holes).

3️⃣ Let it sit for 15–20 minutes.

If the soil was really dry, you can go up to 30–40 minutes.

4️⃣ When the top of the soil feels cool and slightly damp, remove the pot and let it drain completely.

🌿 For severely dry, hydrophobic soil:

💦 Mist or lightly dribble a bit of water on the surface first. This breaks the dry crust so water can wick upward evenly.

💨 If your mix has compacted, use a wooden skewer or chopstick to poke a few gentle holes before soaking. It helps air and water reach the roots again.

🌙 After it’s rehydrated, you can always add a thin mulch layer (like sphagnum moss, bark chips, or coco coir) to help retain moisture next time.

✨ Why it works:

Bottom watering trains your plant’s roots to grow downward and absorb deeply. This means less shock, fewer gnats, and no messy runoff. It’s perfect for pothos, herbs, and seedlings that hate soggy tops but love consistent moisture.

💧 Pro Tip: Do this once a month even for healthy plants. It keeps their soil evenly hydrated and prevents dry pockets from forming over time.

... Read moreBottom watering is a fantastic technique not just for pothos plants but for many indoor plants that prefer consistent moisture without soggy soil surfaces. This method involves placing the potted plant in a shallow bath of water, allowing the soil to draw moisture up through the drainage holes via capillary action. One important benefit of this approach is it encourages roots to grow downwards toward the moisture source, strengthening the plant’s root system and enhancing nutrient uptake over time. For gardeners dealing with extremely dry or hydrophobic soil—where water tends to run off rather than soak in—a simple pre-soak misting can make a big difference. Lightly spritzing the soil surface prior to the bottom watering session helps break any dry crust and allows water to wick upward evenly. Additionally, if your soil has become compacted, creating small holes with a wooden skewer can improve aeration and water penetration, preventing root suffocation and encouraging healthy root respiration. Adding a mulch layer on top of the soil, such as sphagnum moss, bark chips, or coco coir, is another useful tip. Mulching helps retain moisture in the soil by reducing evaporation and can prevent the soil from drying out too quickly between waterings. This is especially helpful in dry indoor climates or during winter months when indoor heating can sap moisture from houseplants. An often overlooked advantage of bottom watering is the reduction in mosquito gnats and other pests that thrive in constantly wet soil surfaces. Because this method keeps the topsoil relatively dry, it creates an environment less favorable for fungal gnats to lay eggs. It also prevents messy runoff and water stains around plant pots, keeping your indoor gardening area cleaner. Expert plant growers recommend performing bottom watering once a month even for healthy plants as a supplementary watering technique. This helps maintain even hydration throughout the potting mix and prevents the formation of dry pockets that can stress roots. For pothos plants, prized for their fast growth and ease of propagation, bottom watering supports vigorous root development and lush foliage growth. Remember to always use room temperature water to avoid shocking roots and to ensure proper drainage by using pots with holes. Bottom watering is a gentle, effective method that improves plant health and longevity, perfect for beginners and seasoned indoor gardeners alike.
