Boothill redesign

I've always been fascinated by character design, especially when it comes to beloved figures like Boothill from Honkai: Star Rail. There's something incredibly rewarding about taking an established character and imagining them through a new lens, which is exactly why I embarked on this Boothill HSR redesign project! My goal was to create an anime-style character that retains Boothill's core essence while exploring some fresh visual elements. I spent a lot of time sketching different ideas, focusing on how a 'human' Boothill might look, especially without his usual gear. I was particularly drawn to the idea of giving him striking features that would stand out, like combining dark skin with braided dark hair and those intense red eyes – I think it adds a really cool, edgy vibe that suits his personality. Of course, you can't talk about Boothill without his iconic black cowboy hat! For this redesign, I kept it, but added a pop of color with a red band to make it even more distinctive. The robotic left arm is another signature element, and I wanted to ensure it still looked powerful and functional, but perhaps with a slightly more streamlined or stylized feel in this anime interpretation. I also played around with facial markings to add another layer of visual interest and mystery, hinting at his backstory without giving everything away. When I was thinking about the overall 'boothill color palette' for this piece, I aimed for a balance of dark, earthy tones mixed with metallic accents for his robotic parts, and then those vibrant reds in his eyes and hat band to really make certain features pop. Thinking about his personality – his gruff exterior with a hidden depth – really guided my artistic choices. Exploring different perspectives, like 'Boothill without hat' or a more 'human' take, allows for a deeper appreciation of the character's design potential.
