Sesame allergen trial blw
Day 62 of our BLW journey and it’s an allergy trial day. Do they make you nervous? They always make me nervous. No reaction today thank goodness! #blwideas #babyledweaning #baby #30plantsaweek #blw
That feeling of dread mixed with excitement on an allergen trial day? I totally get it! Introducing high-risk allergens like sesame to our little ones can be so nerve-wracking, especially when you're doing Baby-Led Weaning. My recent 'sesame allergen baby' trial with my 7-month-old was no exception. It's a big step, but so important for expanding their diet and helping to prevent future allergies. For anyone new to this, sesame is one of the top allergens, so it's recommended to introduce it early and often, just like peanuts or eggs. When I prepared the meal for my 7-month-old, I initially offered a small amount of hummus with naan. What I didn't fully realize until reviewing the ingredients after was that naan often contains sesame seeds or oil! It was a moment of 'oops, good to know!' I quickly switched to offering a small piece of naan with just some cashew butter, which is a great alternative fat source, to ensure we were solely focused on the sesame component from the hummus for the trial. This experience really highlighted the importance of reading every single label, even for foods you think you know well. When you're ready to introduce sesame to your little one, starting small is key. You can try a tiny bit of tahini (sesame paste) mixed into yogurt or a fruit puree, or even a few sesame seeds sprinkled on their food. The goal is to give a small amount for the first time, then observe for any reactions over the next few hours. Keep an eye out for symptoms like hives, swelling around the mouth or eyes, vomiting, or diarrhea. If you see anything concerning, always consult your pediatrician. It's also super helpful to have a plan for how you'll serve it. For BLW babies, you can spread a thin layer of tahini on toast fingers or mix it into a baby-friendly porridge. My goal is always to make it as easy and safe as possible. We’re also working on hitting our '30 plants a week' goal to ensure a really diverse diet, and sometimes that means getting creative with how we introduce new foods, including allergens. Remember, allergen trials don't have to be perfect. There will be days where they try a new flavor like the hummus and aren't sure about it, resulting in just '6.5 teaspoons of food eaten,' as happened with us! That's perfectly normal. The most important thing is consistency and observation. After our successful sesame trial (thank goodness, no reaction!), I felt a huge wave of relief. Every successful introduction builds confidence for both baby and parent. Keep going, mamas and papas, you're doing great!
