Shanghai’s best peking duck 晟永兴 🦆

1 Michelin Star Peking Duck ⭐️

We each ordered 1 portion of caviar peking duck which comes with 2 slides of duck skin with caviar and a serving of duck skin and duck meat. The chef will carve the whole duck in front of you and everything is served fresh. You’re given garlic aioli, peking duck sauce, sugar, alongside cucumber and fresh scallions to pair with the duck and I feel that the best way to eat it, is to combine all of it in one wrap. The garlic aioli cuts through the fattiness of the duck skin and the peking duck sauce combined with the duck fat was amazing. And that’s just the usual peking duck.

Did I mention caviar peking duck??? That’s mouth-gasm on a whole new level. PERIODDDD. Unlike the usual peking duck, it’s served on soft mantou. The umami of the caviar and duck skin was overwhelming good. It was an instant yes for us 🤯 Yes it was fatty, and that’s why there’s only 2 pieces. And honestly the portion was perfect. Fun fact, every duck has a unique“birth cert” in the form of a keychain and you can bring it home as a memento. It’s super cute HAHA 🐥

Honorable mention, the truffle prawns with asparagus ✨ Apparently the prawns were massaged using egg whites for 2h during the preparation stage and the bounciness of the meat really shines through. It was so fresh and very well prepared. The truffle perfectly elevated 2 simple ingredients, and not to forget, the asparagus had the perfect doneness.

While these 2 dishes were mindblowing, there were some misses too. The cold appetiser tofu with fried beancurd skin lacked defining flavours - the tofu was mixed with avocado and it was generally quite bland. Though people who prefer mild flavours would probably appreciate it. Maybe a touch of spice or umami would complete this dish. The staff also recommend the jajiangmian but it tasted very average. You can find bits of duck inside, I guess that’s where all the excess duck fat or meat went.

All in all, the service and ambience was 💯 and the peking duck is to die for 🥵 and honestly the price point is pretty affordable for a 1 Michelin star restaurant!

Damage: $60 per pax

... Read moreVisiting Sheng Yong Xing offers a unique culinary adventure that's more than just about Peking duck. One compelling aspect is the presentation—the entire duck is carved tableside, which adds a theatrical touch to your meal and ensures freshness in every bite. The caviar peking duck is an indulgence that balances the rich duck fat with luxurious umami from the caviar; a gourmet treat I find unforgettable. Pairing it on soft mantou buns with garlic aioli is key to cutting the richness, creating a perfect flavor harmony. Locals and visitors alike appreciate the attention to detail, such as the duck's unique ‘birth certificate’ keychain you can keep, making your dining experience memorable. Beyond duck, don’t overlook the truffle prawns with asparagus. The technique of massaging prawns with egg whites for two hours truly enhances their texture—something I hadn’t encountered before but immediately loved for its freshness and delicate springiness. The truffle elegantly lifts simple ingredients into something spectacular. Although some dishes like the cold tofu appetizer may seem mild or understated compared to the star dishes, they cater well to those preferring subtle flavors in contrast to the rich mains. I recommend complementing your meal with other Shanghai specialties from the menu to fully appreciate the restaurant's breadth. Pricing at around $60 per person is reasonable, considering the 1 Michelin star status and quality presented. The impeccable service and inviting ambience make Sheng Yong Xing a fantastic choice for anyone eager to experience authentic, high-level Peking duck in Shanghai. It’s an experience worth savoring whenever you visit this vibrant city.

Sentosa Peking Duck
Finally tried this Peking duck place — a must for a Peking duck lover like me! ❌ the service this time was probably the worst we’ve experienced in any Chinese restaurant here. There were free drinks at the waiting area, but the staff didn’t mention it at all — just told us to “sit and wait.” S
