... Read moreMy trip to Banff in late March was truly unforgettable, and I highly recommend it if you're considering visiting this beautiful part of Alberta, Canada, around that time! While many think of Banff as a summer or deep-winter destination, late March offers a unique blend of both, making for some incredibly picturesque views and experiences. First off, let's talk about the weather. Late March in Banff is still very much winter, but with hints of spring trying to peek through. Expect temperatures that can range from chilly mornings around -10°C (14°F) to milder afternoons closer to 0°C (32°F). We experienced fresh snowfall, brilliant sunny days, and everything in between. The key here is layering! I found myself constantly adding or removing my outer shell. Definitely pack warm, waterproof clothing – a good winter jacket, waterproof pants, thermal layers, warm hat, gloves, and waterproof boots are non-negotiable. Don't forget sunglasses; the snow glare can be intense on a sunny day! As for activities, late March is fantastic for winter sports. The major ski resorts like Lake Louise Ski Resort and Sunshine Village are usually still in prime condition, often receiving fresh powder. If you're a skier or snowboarder, this could be your last chance to hit the slopes with great snow before the season wraps up. Even if you don't ski, there's plenty to do. Sightseeing is breathtaking. Iconic spots like Lake Louise are still completely frozen over, offering a stunning, serene landscape perfect for ice skating (if conditions allow) or simply walking on the lake. Moraine Lake Road is typically closed until late May/early June, so plan for that – but the views from Lake Louise itself are more than enough to satisfy. Johnston Canyon is another must-see; the frozen waterfalls are absolutely magical, making for an easier and incredibly rewarding ice walk compared to the colder months. Don't forget to drive along the Bow Valley Parkway for a chance to spot wildlife – we saw some deer and even a few elk starting to emerge. The town of Banff itself is charming, with cozy cafes, unique shops, and plenty of restaurants to warm up in after a day outdoors. One of the big advantages of visiting in late March is that it's generally less crowded than the peak Christmas/New Year holiday season or the bustling summer months. You get to enjoy the majestic scenery without feeling overwhelmed by tourists, making for a more peaceful and personal experience. While some high-elevation hiking trails are still snow-covered and inaccessible, the main attractions are usually well-maintained and offer incredible winter vistas. My personal tip for a late March visit? Spend at least one full day exploring Lake Louise and the surrounding area. Even if you're not skiing, the atmosphere is simply magical with the snow-capped mountains reflecting in the partially thawing or fully frozen lake. Grab a hot chocolate and just soak in the view! It’s a perfect blend of winter wonderland and the quiet anticipation of spring, making for some truly unique memories and photos. Don't miss it!
