... Read moreAqua Hoshino from Oshi no Ko is, without a doubt, one of the most intriguing and debated characters in recent anime. Every fan I talk to seems to have a different take on him, but one question always pops up: Is Aqua Hoshino a manipulator? From my perspective, it's not a simple yes or no, but rather a deep dive into his trauma, intelligence, and unwavering resolve. On one hand, it's hard to deny Aqua's manipulative tendencies. He’s incredibly strategic, always thinking several steps ahead to achieve his ultimate goal of avenging his mother, Ai. We see him calculating outcomes, influencing people, and setting up situations that serve his agenda. He seems to possess an almost uncanny ability to understand others' emotions and thought patterns, which he then uses to his advantage. This is something that really struck me, especially when the series delves into his past lives and how he's trying to reconstruct and understand Ai's true persona. He's not just reacting; he's orchestrating. He can be cold and detached, viewing people as pawns in his grand scheme, which screams 'manipulator' to many. However, labeling him purely as a manipulator feels incomplete. Aqua is driven by profound grief and a desire for justice. His actions, no matter how questionable, stem from a traumatic past. He's burdened by the knowledge of his mother's murder and the secret life she led. This isn't malice for the sake of it; it's a desperate, almost self-destructive quest for truth. Is it manipulation if your intentions, however misguided, are rooted in protecting those you love (like Ruby) and seeking retribution for an unbearable loss? It's a fine line between strategic planning and outright manipulation, and Aqua often dances right on it. Take his relationship with Akane Kurokawa, for instance. There's a moment where he thinks, 'AKANE KUROKAWA, I COULD USE HER ROAD.' This clearly shows his strategic mindset. He recognizes her talent for mimicry and her ability to perfectly embody a character, even Ai. He leverages this, guiding her to uncover details about Ai's past, essentially using her skills for his investigation. However, even in this 'manipulation,' there's a complex dynamic. He also shows moments of genuine concern for Akane, protecting her from harm and even developing some form of affection. It's not a purely transactional relationship, which makes his character even more fascinating. He's trying to understand AI's true personality, even her secret life, and Akane becomes a crucial tool in that quest. Ultimately, I think Aqua Hoshino is a deeply conflicted character who resorts to manipulative tactics out of necessity and a warped sense of duty. He's not evil, but his methods are often morally gray. His journey is about uncovering the truth, and he's willing to sacrifice a lot, including his own happiness and potentially his moral compass, to get there. It makes you wonder, if you were in his shoes, would you do the same? What are your thoughts on Aqua's character? Is he a manipulator, a hero, or something else entirely?
