📚Iron Flame Book Review🐉

Some sequels make you fall right back into the story. This one made me wait for it.

Iron Flame felt like one long build-up. Not in a bad way exactly, because I never fully disconnected from it—but I also never fully felt in it the way I did with the first book.

The pacing just felt slower, more stretched out, like it was constantly setting pieces in place and telling me the payoff was coming… without it actually arriving for a long time. I kept thinking “okay, now it’s going to pick up,” and it would tease that moment, then shift back into more setup again.

Because of that, I never felt fully gripped in the middle the way I wanted to be. I wasn’t bored, but I wasn’t obsessed either—and that’s a big difference compared to how instantly hooked I was with the first book.

And then the final stretch hits.

And it hits hard. Suddenly everything escalates, everything feels urgent, emotional, intense—exactly what I was waiting for the entire time. The ending honestly delivers in a way that makes you understand what the book was building toward the whole time.

But I can’t ignore that it took so long to get there.

By the time I was fully invested, I was already near the end. And that’s what makes this one so hard to rate for me—the payoff is genuinely strong, but the journey to get there felt uneven.

I’m glad I read it. I just wish I had been just as hooked in the beginning and middle as I was in those final pages.

... Read moreHaving read Iron Flame, I can relate to the experience of a story that takes its time unfolding. While the pacing feels deliberate and slow at times, it allowed me to appreciate the complexity of the political intrigue and character relationships. The series invites readers into a richly built world where themes like loyalty, trust, and personal strength are deeply explored. One of the things that stood out to me was the gradual revelation of secrets about leadership and the dragons themselves. As Violet navigates these dangers alongside intense challenges like training at Basgiath and the mounting war, the narrative layers tension carefully. This slow burn can test patience, but the payoff is a high-stakes climax filled with emotional weight and impactful revelations. Fans of slow-burn romance and enemies-to-lovers tropes will find much to enjoy here, especially as the protagonist's bond with the dragon riders intensifies. The blend of military-style training, war college atmosphere, and political maneuvering creates a unique backdrop that amplifies the stakes. In my view, the delayed payoff may be challenging for some readers, but it's also a testament to the author's skill in setting up an elaborate and immersive story. For those who invest the time, the emotional payoff and plot twists make for a memorable experience. This book also raises interesting questions about strength, vulnerability, and the cost of secrets, which linger long after the final page. Overall, if you appreciate character-driven romantasy with political depth and a gradual build to a thrilling conclusion, Iron Flame is a worthwhile read—just be ready for a journey that asks for patience but rewards with intensity and heart.

My question for you is not going to be, “What did you think of this story,” but instead, if you did not care for Fourth Wing/Iron Flame, what book would you recommend instead? If you thought Fourth Wing was poorly written (more specifically, prose-wise), what is a book you think is written better?
