A Writers Brain

2025/8/26 Edited to

... Read moreThat 'nough said' feeling? Oh, I totally get it! My brain often feels exactly like that humorous cartoon – a chaotic, colorful stream of lines exploding with ideas when I'm trying to figure out my next plot! Those 'rabbit-like figures' perfectly capture the internal struggle. One minute I'm brimming with inspiration, the next it's just pure, unadulterated brainstorming chaos, trying to piece together a coherent narrative. For so long, my writing process felt like I was constantly wrestling this wild, untamed beast in my head. I'd have snippets of brilliant dialogue, vivid character traits, or gripping scene ideas, but tying them all together into a compelling, character-driven plot? That was the real challenge. It often left me feeling overwhelmed, just like the image suggests, with my mind thinking of my next plot but without a clear path. That's why I started looking for resources to bring some order to the beautiful mess that is a writer's brain. And that's how I stumbled upon Lisa Cron's 'Story Genius.' You might have seen its distinctive cover – it's quite recognizable in the writing community, often featuring bold typography that hints at the groundbreaking ideas within. I remember seeing the 'Story Genius' book cover online and instantly wondering if it held the key to unlocking my own chaotic plot-making process. The title itself, 'Story Genius,' promises a transformative approach to storytelling. What I found inside was truly eye-opening. 'Story Genius' isn't just another 'how to plot' book; it delves deep into the psychological underpinnings of character and story. Cron argues that a compelling plot doesn't come from external events alone, but from a character's internal struggle, their deep-seated desires, and how they change as they try to achieve them. It's about figuring out why your character does what they do, and how that internal motivation drives every single plot point. This approach really resonated with my own experience of having a mind thinking of my next plot, but needing a way to anchor it. Applying her principles has been a game-changer for me. Instead of just brainstorming random events, I now start with my character's core yearning and their fatal flaw. This helps me create a "before and after" scenario that naturally shapes the plot, making those chaotic lines in my brain start to connect. It’s like having a blueprint for that erupting stream of ideas, guiding them into a purposeful direction. I used to just throw ideas at the wall, hoping something would stick. Now, I have a framework that helps me ask the right questions about my characters and their journey, ensuring that every twist and turn serves a deeper purpose. It’s still a creative, sometimes messy, process – after all, a writer's brain is rarely neat! – but it’s a focused mess. This practical guidance has made a huge difference in turning my scattered ideas into cohesive narratives. So, if your creative mind feels as wild and wonderful as that cartoon, and you're constantly seeking ways to refine your plotting process, I highly recommend exploring 'Story Genius' by Lisa Cron. It’s an invaluable tool for understanding how to build a story from the inside out, helping you transform your chaotic thoughts into a brilliant, well-structured plot. It’s definitely helped me feel less like those bewildered 'rabbit-like figures' and more like I’m guiding the stream of ideas towards a truly compelling story.

My best method for writers block 🤍
The best way I overcome writer’s block isn’t forcing words — it’s warming the story back up. First, I add new songs to the playlist I keep for my current work in progress. Music helps me reconnect to the mood, the emotional stakes, and the rhythm of the story. Next, I go back to Pinterest. I
