BOOK REVIEW: Wide Sargasso Sea

Wide Sargasso Sea is a “prequel” to Charlotte Brontë’s Jane Eyre written over a century after the original source material.

It tells the life of “Bertha”, whose real name is Antoinette before she was married to Rochester and became the crazy woman in the attic depicted in Jane Eyre.

I read this novel for class and it was very dark. Although I enjoyed having a backstory to Bertha, I wish Jean Rhys had given her a light or fun backstory. That was not the case. Her story is very tragic (I would dare to say more tragic than that of Jane’s). It also solidified my hate for Mr. Rochester.

⭐️Overall rating: 4/5

... Read moreWide Sargasso Sea, set in post-colonial Jamaica, examines themes of identity, colonialism, and mental health through the lens of Bertha, known as Antoinette. Rhys paints a vivid picture of Antoinette’s life, showcasing her descent into madness caused by societal pressures and personal trauma. Critics regard the novel as a critical response to the portrayal of women in classic literature, particularly through the character of Bertha, whose voice is finally acknowledged in this prequel. The setting and historical context play a significant role in shaping the narrative. The lush landscapes of Jamaica contrast sharply with Antoinette's inner turmoil, emphasizing her isolation. Rhys skillfully interweaves the personal and political, bringing to light the effects of colonialism on individual identity. The book has sparked discussions about race, gender, and power dynamics, making it a cornerstone of feminist literary criticism. Moreover, the character development of Mr. Rochester is also scrutinized, transforming him from a romantic figure in Brontë's narrative to a more complex and questionable character. This shift invites readers to reassess their perceptions shaped by traditional narratives. As a response to Jane Eyre, Wide Sargasso Sea not only tells the story of a woman silenced by her circumstances but also critiques the societal constructs that led to her tragic fate, making it a compelling read for those interested in literature that challenges the status quo.
