Covering sneezes with your elbow or tissue helps reduce germ spread.

... Read moreSneezing is a common reflex that helps expel irritants and germs from our respiratory system, but how we cover our sneezes can greatly impact public health. Sneezing into your hands can turn them into "biohazard mittens," carrying countless germs that easily transfer to surfaces and other people. In contrast, covering your sneeze with your elbow or a disposable tissue traps the droplets and prevents widespread contamination. In my experience, adopting the habit of using my elbow instead of my hands has significantly reduced how often I worry about spreading bugs to colleagues or family. It’s a simple adjustment that makes a big difference. When a tissue is used, it’s important to dispose of it immediately and wash your hands to prevent lingering germs. Following these practices not only helps in day-to-day hygiene but also plays a vital role during flu seasons and outbreaks, reducing the chance of infections like colds, flu, or even more serious respiratory illnesses. The CDC consistently emphasizes these methods because they are effective, easy to do, and a crucial step in maintaining a healthy community. Additionally, practicing good respiratory etiquette—such as sneezing into your elbow—should be paired with regular handwashing and sanitizing commonly touched objects to maximize protection. These small, conscious actions collectively create a safer environment for everyone around us.
