Point of View Unit | Explicit Instruction Slides

Point of view finally clicked for my students!

This Point of View unit walks 4th–5th graders step-by-step through identifying first-person and third-person narration using clear routines, short passages, and hands-on practice.

If your students mix up “I” vs. “he/she/they,” this unit makes it stick.

... Read moreI remember how tricky it was for my students (and honestly, for me sometimes!) to grasp the concept of Point of View. It's not just about 'who is telling the story,' but really understanding how they're telling it and what that means for the reader. I used to see so many confused faces when we talked about 'I' versus 'he/she/they.' That's why finding effective ways to teach this is so crucial. Let's first break down what we mean by narration. Narration definition simply refers to the act of telling a story. When we narrate, we are recounting events, experiences, or ideas. The point of view is the angle from which the story is told. For elementary students, focusing on first-person and third-person is key. First-person narration is when a character in the story is telling it. You'll see pronouns like 'I,' 'me,' 'my,' 'we,' and 'us.' For example, a point of view sentence might be: 'I walked to the store, humming my favorite song.' This perspective gives us direct access to the narrator's thoughts and feelings. Then there's third-person narration, where an outside narrator tells the story. They aren't a character in the events. Here, you'll find pronouns like 'he,' 'she,' 'it,' 'they,' 'him,' 'her,' and 'them.' A point of view sentence example for third-person could be: 'She watched the rain fall, wondering if he would arrive soon.' This can be further broken down into limited (knowing one character's thoughts) or omniscient (knowing all characters' thoughts), but for 4th-5th graders, simply identifying the external narrator is a great start. A common question I've heard is, 'is there a fourth person point of view?' In traditional English literature and grammar, we primarily categorize point of view into first, second, and third person. While some academic discussions might explore 'fourth' or 'fifth' person in very specific, often philosophical or linguistic contexts (like indefinite pronouns or collective consciousness), for the purpose of teaching literary analysis in elementary and middle school, focusing on first, second, and third person provides a solid and comprehensive foundation. Second person, using 'you,' is less common in narrative fiction but appears in instructions or direct address. The real magic happens with practice narration through engaging activities. I've found that students learn best by doing. Identifying point of view visually can be a game-changer. Imagine showing students pictures or short comic strips and asking them to describe what's happening from different perspectives. This helps them visualize how the narrator's position changes. One of the most effective methods I've used involves recognizing first to third person activities (and sometimes second!). This unit includes fantastic sorting activities where students literally sort sentences or short passages into 'first-person' or 'third-person' piles based on the pronouns they find. It's hands-on and makes the abstract concept concrete. We've also done 'teacher think-alouds' where I model how to identify the point of view in a passage, explaining my thought process step-by-step. Then, students get to try it themselves with similar passages. Worksheets that require them to not just identify but also explain their reasoning are invaluable for deep understanding. These types of practical exercises, from simple pronoun identification to explaining their choices in assessment pages, make all the difference. When students actively engage with the material and see it in action, that's when Point of View truly 'clicks' for them. It's so rewarding to see them confidently analyzing how a story is told!
