Resting “B” Face?!

Dealing with what’s commonly called Resting B Face (RBF) can be surprisingly relatable. Many of us have caught ourselves in candid photos looking unintentionally serious or unapproachable, even though we know we’re friendly and warm. It’s a quirky facial phenomenon where the neutral expression naturally gives off a vibe of displeasure or sternness. From my personal experience, RBF is often misunderstood. People may assume someone with RBF is upset or disinterested when, in reality, their face is just relaxed. I remember attending a family gathering where several relatives commented on how ‘intense’ I looked in photos — despite me having a great time. It made me realize how much mindless judgment goes into interpreting neutral faces. Interestingly, psychologists suggest that RBF happens because of subtle muscle tensions around the eyes and mouth that mimic expressions of anger or disapproval. While you can't completely change your natural face, being more aware can help. Some have found that consciously relaxing their facial muscles or adding a slight smile even when not speaking can soften their expression in photos and everyday interactions. Another practical tip is embracing RBF humorously. Sharing candid moments highlighting your ‘serious’ face alongside your true friendly personality can turn perceived negativity into a fun conversation starter. It’s a great way to reclaim control over how others perceive you. Ultimately, RBF doesn’t define who you are, but it offers a glimpse into how facial expressions influence social interactions. Compassion and understanding toward ourselves and others can help reduce misunderstandings tied to something as simple as a resting face.
