When you just can’t pick one

2024/9/2 Edited to

... Read moreHey bookworms! If you're anything like me, you've probably faced that glorious-yet-daunting predicament: a stack of incredible books, all calling your name, and you just can't pick one. It's like having a buffet of wisdom and inspiration, but decision paralysis kicks in! You want to know "how do I choose" the right one that speaks to your soul *right now*? I totally get it. I used to spend ages just staring at my shelves, feeling overwhelmed by options like "YOU ARE A BADASS," "The Alchemist," or even deeper dives into personal power like "Psycho-Cybernetics" or "UN#@%!YOURSELF." Over time, I've developed a few personal strategies that really help me cut through the noise and land on the perfect read. Here's how I tackle the "too many good books" dilemma: 1. What's Your Current Vibe or Challenge? This is my absolute first step. Before I even look at covers, I check in with myself. Am I feeling stuck and needing a kickstart? Then a book like Jen Sincero's "YOU ARE A BADASS" or Mark Manson's "NOT GIVING A F*CK" might be exactly what I need to shift my perspective and boost my confidence. Am I looking for a profound, spiritual journey or a story that inspires hope and destiny, like "The Alchemist"? Or maybe I'm grappling with a specific skill, like building better habits, or even learning about "MAKING MONEY"? Identifying your current emotional, mental, or practical need acts as a powerful filter. 2. The "First Few Pages" Test. Once I've narrowed down a few contenders based on my vibe, I commit to reading the first chapter or a significant portion of each. Does the author's voice immediately resonate? Does the content hook me? For example, with a book like "Psycho-Cybernetics," I'd be looking for clear, actionable insights right from the start. If I'm not engaged within the first 20-30 pages, I usually put it aside for another time. There are too many amazing books out there to force myself through one that doesn't click from the beginning. 3. Quick Scan for Keywords & Structure. I often flip through the table of contents and skim chapter headings. This gives me a quick overview of the book's scope and how it's organized. If I'm looking for practical advice, I want to see clear sections or steps. Books like "The Go-Giver" often have a straightforward narrative that's easy to digest. This quick scan helps me determine if the book aligns with how I want to consume information at that moment. 4. Don't Feel Obligated to Finish. This is a liberating realization! Sometimes, even after all my careful choosing, a book just isn't right *for now*. It doesn't mean it's a bad book; it just means it's not what I need at this precise moment. I've learned it's perfectly fine to put a book down, even halfway through, and pick up another. I might return to it months or years later and find it's exactly what I needed then. This takes the pressure off the initial choice and makes reading more enjoyable. **5. Trust Your Gut (and sometimes, a friend who gets you).** Ultimately, there's a certain intuition involved. Sometimes, a book just feels right. And if a friend whose taste you trust raves about something, it's often worth checking out. Maybe they've discovered a gem from "Esther and Jerry Hicks" that could shift your perspective. Choosing your next read should be an exciting journey, not a stressful task. By using these little tricks, I've found that picking "the one" from a sea of fantastic options becomes much easier and more enjoyable. Happy reading!
