The recent allegations against a University of Delhi PhD student highlight a troubling issue: the presence of abusive and threatening behavior can severely undermine not only individual safety but also the integrity of scientific communities. Science thrives on collaboration, open dialogue, and mutual respect. When individuals use their positions or platforms to spread sexism or harassment, it damages trust and inclusiveness. In my experience, institutions that fail to swiftly address such misconduct risk fostering environments where vulnerable groups, including women, feel unsafe and undervalued. Moreover, a scientist’s professional work, such as research on evolutionary biology or related fields, should be evaluated separately from their conduct in social spaces. However, when the latter involves harmful behaviors, it reflects poorly on the academic setting and must be confronted. Advocacy for safe academic spaces should be a priority for universities globally. Institutions can implement clear codes of conduct, provide training on gender sensitivity and harassment prevention, and establish transparent reporting mechanisms. These steps are crucial in protecting students and staff and ensuring that science remains a domain open and welcoming to everyone. Ultimately, accountability helps cultivate a positive and productive scientific community. Protecting minority groups and upholding ethical standards strengthens not only individuals but the progress of science itself. This issue should inspire universities everywhere to be vigilant and proactive in fostering safe environments and eliminating any form of abuse or discrimination.
