... Read moreMy latest adventure took me right to the shores of Puget Sound, and wow, what a treasure trove of marine life! I've always heard about the rich biodiversity here, but seeing it up close during a low tide excursion was truly something else. It's like stepping into a vibrant, alien world right here in Washington. One of the first things that caught my eye were the incredible sea anemones. I spotted so many different kinds – some bright green and pink, others a fiery orange, nestled among the rocks and seaweed in the tide pools. It was fascinating to see them both retracted, looking like colorful blobs, and then slowly unfurling their delicate tentacles. They're such beautiful, yet surprisingly hardy, creatures that add so much color to the often-rocky environment. Of course, no Puget Sound marine exploration is complete without spotting some crabs! While I didn't manage to snap a clear photo of a live Dungeness crab in action (they're quite elusive!), seeing a vintage-style poster celebrating them made me appreciate their significance to the region. I also saw a clever light-colored spider crab, perfectly camouflaged on the sandy bottom, almost daring me to find it. These crustaceans are masters of disguise! The tide pools were teeming with other unique marine invertebrates too. I was thrilled to discover an orange sea cucumber, slowly inching along, and various chitons clinging tightly to barnacle-covered rocks. Flipping one over (gently, of course, and returning it quickly!) revealed its fascinating segmented, blue-grey foot. Further out, in clearer water, I even saw delicate red and pink tube worms, their feathery crowns swaying with the gentle currents – a truly mesmerizing sight. And who could forget the starfish? I found a beautiful orange starfish partially hidden under a rock, its textured arms a stark contrast to the rough barnacles. It's amazing how much life can be tucked away in such small spaces. Each discovery felt like uncovering a tiny, living gem. For anyone visiting Puget Sound, I highly recommend exploring the tide pools during low tide. It's a fantastic way to connect with nature and witness the incredible marine ecosystem firsthand. Just remember to tread lightly, observe from a respectful distance, and leave everything as you found it so these amazing creatures can continue to thrive. It's an unforgettable experience that makes you appreciate the hidden wonders beneath the waves.
