The Drowned Jolly — Flag That Sings the Dead
They call it Specimen XIII, the Drowned Jolly, but the sea calls it something older.
They say when Captain William Kidd swung from the gallows, the wind caught his final breath and spun it into a thread of stormlight.
That breath wove itself into the black sail that hung above him.
Three centuries later, the sail washed ashore—tattered, wet, and still breathing.
I found it buried in the dunes of a forgotten harbor, wrapped around a rusted cutlass.
When I touched it, the fabric shivered like living skin.
A voice rolled through the cloth—deep, drowned, laughing:
> “Ye bear the name Kidd.
I remember that blood.
Hoist me high, heir of the hanged one,
and I’ll sing ye every death the sea remembers.”
That night the wind rose without warning.
The flag lifted itself and began to hum—a low, salt-soaked note that pulled thunder out of clear sky.
The skull on its face cracked a grin.
