My therapist's words, 'People don't abandon the people they love, they abandon the people they're using,' truly offered me the closure I'd been desperately searching for. For so long, I blamed myself whenever someone important walked away. I'd replay every conversation, questioning what I did wrong, wondering if I wasn't enough. So, what does 'being used' really look like, beyond the obvious? It’s rarely malicious, often unconscious on their part. Think about those who only reach out when they need a favor, a listening ear for their problems, or a confidence boost. They might be present for the good times but vanish when life throws you a curveball. True reciprocity is missing. There’s no mutual support, just a one-sided flow of energy. Recognizing these patterns isn't about bitterness; it's about setting healthy boundaries and protecting your peace. When you finally grasp that people don't abandon people they love, but rather those who serve a temporary purpose, you stop chasing and start evaluating. This insight has been incredibly empowering.
