Cumberland Island

Stepping onto Cumberland Island felt like entering another world, a true escape from the everyday hustle. The first thing that struck me was the sheer wildness of it all – a place where nature reigns supreme and history whispers from every corner. If you're looking for an unforgettable adventure, this Georgia barrier island needs to be on your list! Getting there is part of the experience itself, usually a scenic ferry ride from St. Marys. Once your feet touch the sandy shores, you're immediately immersed. The island is largely undeveloped, which means transportation is primarily by foot or bike. I highly recommend renting a bike or bringing your own to explore more of the island's expansive beauty. The dirt paths wind through incredible landscapes, from dense maritime forests to wide-open marshlands and pristine beaches. The wildlife encounters are truly special. Of course, the star attractions are the famous wild horses that roam freely. Seeing them graze peacefully against the backdrop of historic structures, or even on the beach, is an absolutely breathtaking sight. It feels like a living postcard. But keep an eye out for other creatures too! I spotted deer, various shorebirds, and even armadillos. A word of caution, though: the island is their home, and that includes reptiles. There are signs warning, "DANGER BEWARE OF ALLIGATORS" near some of the ponds and marshy areas, so always be aware of your surroundings and keep a respectful distance from all wildlife. History buffs will be captivated by the island's past. The most prominent sites are the Dungeness Ruins, the remains of a grand mansion that burned down in the 1950s. Walking through these extensive stone ruins is incredibly atmospheric, allowing you to imagine the lives lived here centuries ago. The ancient trees with their massive trunks and exposed roots, heavily adorned with Spanish moss, create a hauntingly beautiful setting around the ruins and along many of the trails. It's a photographer's dream! For a full day of exploration, make sure to pack plenty of water, snacks, sunscreen, and insect repellent. There are no stores on the island, so come prepared. Wear comfortable walking shoes, as you’ll be doing a lot of exploring. Whether you’re marveling at the majestic oaks, searching for wild horses, or reflecting on the history embedded in the ruins, Cumberland Island offers a unique blend of natural beauty and historical intrigue that truly makes it a one-of-a-kind destination.
