Did I mention that it was as HOT 🥵!!!!!! #fairday #flordiaheat #floridacheck #workingmomof6 #rlshama
Experiencing Florida’s hot summer days, especially during outdoor events like fairs, can be quite challenging. As a working mom managing six kids, I’ve learned that preparation and self-care are critical to surviving and enjoying these intense heatwaves. Here are some practical tips and insights from my recent fair day experience that might help you beat the heat: First, hydration is absolutely essential. I always carry plenty of water bottles for myself and my kids to prevent dehydration, which can cause headaches and fatigue—as I experienced during the fair. Drinking water at regular intervals, rather than waiting until you feel thirsty, helps maintain energy levels and stave off heat exhaustion. Second, protective clothing and sun protection are must-haves. Wearing lightweight, breathable fabrics and a wide-brimmed hat helped shield my face from the relentless Florida sun. Applying broad-spectrum sunscreen every couple of hours is equally important to avoid sunburn, which can worsen the overall discomfort. Third, pacing your activities can make a huge difference. The heat can drain your energy rapidly, so it’s helpful to take breaks in shaded or air-conditioned areas whenever possible. During the fair, short rests under shady tents or inside cool buildings helped my family recharge. Lastly, planning your day to avoid peak sun hours, typically early afternoon, can reduce exposure to the highest temperatures. If you must be outside during the hottest parts, try to stay active in the early morning or late evening when conditions are milder. Despite the discomfort, being outdoors with family at community events is rewarding. Still, the experience reminded me why I prefer cooler weather here in Florida and reinforced the importance of respecting the summer heat. Hopefully, these insights will help others handle the heat better and enjoy their time outside without feeling overwhelmed.
