Day 3 - Momentum Medicine - Growing your own

Day 3 – Momentum Medicine – Grow an edible garden 🫑🥒🍅

Since saying goodbye to the corporate space, I am putting more focus into growing my own produce. Once you have tried it fresh it really does spoil you. I love nothing better than going out, seeing what I have and creating something from paddock to plate.

This year has been challenging for growing veges between, unexpected bouts of frost, grasshopper plague, heatwave causing sunburnt veges, and the weather dipping from hot to cold on and off it’s no wonder the plants are confused and struggling.

One thing for certain…what they are proving is high quality, high nutritional products with so much flavour.

I’m growing a variety of tomatoes, cucumbers, capsicums, beetroots, strawberries, pumpkins, squash, silver beet and a variety of shallots and herbs.

The great thing is everything is grown in pots, which means anyone can do it.

... Read moreGrowing your own edible garden can be a deeply rewarding experience, especially when you do it in pots which makes it accessible even for those with limited space. From personal experience, transitioning from indoor life or a corporate environment to nurturing your own plants outdoors reconnects you with nature and brings a sense of accomplishment. One important aspect I’ve learned is how to manage common challenges such as frost, pests like grasshoppers, heatwaves, and fluctuating temperatures. For frost-prone areas, using frost cloths or moving pots indoors during cold snaps helps protect young seedlings. To tackle pests, natural remedies such as neem oil sprays or introducing beneficial insects like ladybugs work well without harming the plants. Sunburn on vegetables often occurs under intense heat waves, but shading plants with light fabric or placing pots in partial sun areas during peak heat can prevent damage. Also, regular watering in the early morning or late afternoon helps maintain plant health during heatwaves. Choosing the right varieties is key to success; smaller-fruited tomato and cucumber cultivars can thrive better in pots. Companion planting small herbs beside vegetables not only saves space but can deter pests and enhance flavors. The joy of harvesting your own high-nutrient, flavorful produce is unparalleled. Since homegrown fruits and vegetables bypass long transport and storage, they retain more nutrients and have superior taste compared to store-bought. This paddock-to-plate approach fosters healthier eating habits and a more sustainable lifestyle. By sharing these real-life gardening experiences, I hope others feel inspired to start their own edible gardens. Whether on a balcony, patio, or small backyard, growing fresh vegetables in pots with mindful care can bring satisfaction, wellness, and delicious meals to your table.
