Under the theme of “WTF”, Noblemen wore dog collars and barked at their leaders just to feel like they belonged to a “special society.”
Members of the 18th-century Bavarian "Order of the Pug" (Mopsorden), a secret society for Catholics, were required to wear dog collars as part of their initiation rituals to symbolize loyalty. One of the most fascinating aspects of secret societies like the 'Order of the Pug' is how symbolism and ritual were used to create a sense of belonging and trust among members. Wearing dog collars and barking not only represented loyalty but also served as a way to stand out from ordinary society, reinforcing a strong group identity. In modern times, it’s intriguing to compare these eccentric rituals with how people create community and express loyalty—sometimes through unconventional means, like fan clubs, hobby groups, or digital communities. Personally, learning about such bizarre historical practices reminds me how human beings have always sought connection in creative ways—even if they seem odd by today’s standards. The ‘Order of the Pug’ highlights how rituals, no matter how strange, can forge bonds and structure meaning within social groups. Moreover, this example opens up broader reflections on history itself: what we often consider ‘normal’ behavior is just a product of cultural context, and many past traditions might appear outrageous or amusing now. Investigating obscure groups like this not only provides entertainment but also enriches our understanding of social dynamics across time. In essence, reading about these peculiar traditions encourages us to embrace curiosity about the past and to recognize the complexity behind the customs that shape human societies.
