It’s critical to recognize that time is a valuable resource, especially when navigating systemic barriers such as economic inequity, limited access to healthcare, and education gaps. Unpaid contributions can lead to chronic burnout and hinder sustainability in community initiatives. Often, organizations have budgets to compensate external consultants or speakers but overlook paying community members who hold the lived expertise and cultural knowledge vital for authentic community engagement. Acknowledging lived experience as valuable expertise means shifting towards fair compensation and support systems that empower marginalized people rather than expecting them to sacrifice their limited resources for free labor. True community care involves sustainable practices that prioritize the well-being of the people involved, mitigating financial strain and preventing burnout. I encourage open dialogue around these issues to foster a deeper understanding of how community support mechanisms can be equitable and inclusive.
