What type of traveler are you?

Honestly, I'm torn! I can't say I prefer one over the other, and my guess is that some of you would probably feel the same. It really depends. If it's just my husband and me, we've had some of the most amazing experiences just winging it. Like that one time we went to Canada for a day and ate at FallsView STK that overlooks the Niagara Falls. We've stumbled upon hidden cafes, stumbled our way into local festivals, and found those ‘off the beaten path’ moments that you can't plan like finding the castle Casa Loma on our drive back home. But, when the kids are in tow, things change. Suddenly, a little structure becomes our best friend. We research the area, find a bunch of places we want to see (think kid-friendly museums, parks, and those must-try ice cream spots!), and then we just let the day unfold, using our list as a loose guide, not a rigid schedule. It is a guide that is flexible. As a traveler I think this is a good balance.

It's like, you want to make sure you hit the highlights, but you also want to leave room for those unexpected detours that turn into the best memories. It's a balance as a traveler. So just out of curiosity traveler friends, what’s your take? Do you plan every minute, or do you prefer to see where the wind takes you? It would be great to hear everyone’s opinions. Let's chat in the comments!

... Read moreThe age-old question of whether to meticulously plan every detail of a trip or to simply let spontaneity guide your adventures is one many travelers grapple with. For me, it's not a matter of one being inherently better than the other, but rather understanding what kind of experience I'm seeking and *who I'm traveling with*. This journey of discovering my evolving travel style has truly transformed my trips. When we talk about a 'planned itinerary,' it often conjures images of rigid schedules and no room for deviation. However, a truly enriching planned itinerary isn't about ticking off boxes; it's about setting intentions. Are you looking for personal growth through cultural immersion? Do you want to forge meaningful connections with locals? Or perhaps community engagement is your priority, volunteering or participating in local events? By defining these intentions beforehand, even a planned trip can feel incredibly authentic and fulfilling. For instance, researching local markets or smaller, less touristy museums can give a planned trip a spontaneous feel, allowing for discovery within a structured framework. This ensures that the experiences foster personal growth and deeper engagement, far beyond just shopping or typical nightlife, which some of those luxury travel queries hint at wanting. On the flip side, embracing spontaneity doesn't mean a complete lack of thought. It's more about being open to the unexpected and allowing the destination to reveal itself. The thrill of finding a hidden cafe or stumbling into a local festival, as I've experienced, often creates the most cherished memories. This 'spontaneous adventurer' spirit can lead to unique cultural exploration and connections you'd never find in a guidebook. However, even with spontaneity, a little preparation goes a long way. Knowing a few key phrases in the local language, understanding local customs, or having a general idea of safe areas can empower you to truly embrace the moment without unnecessary stress. Ultimately, the best approach often lies in a blend. My experience has taught me that the goal isn't to be exclusively a planner or exclusively spontaneous, but to cultivate an 'adventuresome spirit' that can adapt. When considering your next trip, ask yourself: What personal travel theme resonates most with you? Is it 'discovery,' 'relaxation,' 'challenge,' or 'connection'? Aligning your trip with an authentic intention will make it feel less forced and more rewarding. Maybe it's about designing a 'bespoke trip' that starts with a loose framework – a flight and a few nights' accommodation – and then filling in the gaps as you meet people and uncover local gems. This balance allows for the comfort of some structure while leaving ample room for the magic of unexpected detours. It’s about creating a travel aesthetic that truly reflects who you are, whether you're a solo explorer, a couple, or navigating the world with family. What's your sweet spot between the perfectly planned and the wonderfully wild? I'd love to hear your thoughts!
