Daily Devotional: When Others Make Assumptions

Sometimes we find ourselves in situations where people make assumptions about us based on what they have heard or simply on what they see. When this happens, it can be hurtful. We may begin asking ourselves, What have I done to make them look down on me? Why do they think this way about me?

But we have to remember that Jesus Himself faced the same kind of judgment.

“Is not this the carpenter...?” - Mark 6:3

People dismissed Jesus because of what they thought they knew about Him. Even one of His future disciples questioned Him before truly knowing Him.

“Can there any good thing come out of Nazareth?” - John 1:46

People often judge based on our backgrounds, appearances, or what they have heard from others. They do not always take the time to understand our situation or get to know us personally. Instead, they choose to believe what they want to believe.

While false assumptions can hurt, we must remember where God looks.

“...For the Lord does not see as man sees; for man looks at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.” - 1 Samuel 16:7

People see actions, but God sees our intentions. He knows our motives. He understands our struggles, our growth, and the reasons behind the things we do. While others may only see a small part of the picture, God sees it all.

In moments like these, we must remember what Christ says about us.

“For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works...” – Ephesians 2:10

You are God's workmanship, not a project for people to define. Your identity is not found in the assumptions of others, but in what God says about you.

So when people make assumptions, spread rumors, or misunderstand your intentions, remember that your identity is not determined by their opinion. God knows your heart. He knows your motives. He knows who you are in Christ. While others may judge by appearances, the Lord sees the heart.

Therefore, continue serving Him faithfully, regardless of what others may think.

“And whatsoever ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men; Knowing that of the Lord ye shall receive the reward of the inheritance: for ye serve the Lord Christ.” – Colossians 3:23-24

... Read moreFacing assumptions and judgments can be deeply painful, especially when we feel misunderstood by those around us. From personal experience, I’ve found that grounding myself in scripture and God’s truth can provide clarity and peace amid the noise of others’ opinions. The verse from Proverbs 29:25, "The fear of man brings a snare, but whoever trusts in the Lord shall be safe," has often reminded me to shift my focus from fearing human judgment to placing my trust fully in God’s protection and understanding. In my own walk, I’ve encountered moments when others quickly judged my motives or misunderstood my actions without truly knowing my heart. It’s natural to question ourselves during those times, but reflecting on Jesus’ experience—being dismissed as "the carpenter's son" and doubted because of His humble origins—helps to put things into perspective. Just as Jesus was more than what people assumed, so are we valuable beyond what others may think or say. One practical way to navigate these challenges is to cultivate a mindset that cherishes God’s viewpoint above all. Scriptures like 1 Samuel 16:7 remind us that God looks at the heart, not merely outward appearances. This encourages me to continually examine my own intentions and seek to align them with God’s will, rather than trying to conform to others’ expectations. Serving God "heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men" (Colossians 3:23) has been transformative in finding peace and purpose. When we remember that our ultimate reward comes from God, we become less shaken by rumors or false assumptions. Instead, we take comfort in knowing we are God’s workmanship, created for good works (Ephesians 2:10), and that our identity is secured in Him. If you’re currently struggling with the weight of others’ judgments or assumptions, I encourage you to reflect on these promises and truths. Surround yourself with supportive faith communities, pray for strength to overlook negative opinions, and let God’s love and acceptance redefine your sense of worth. In doing so, you’ll find freedom from the fear of man and a renewed commitment to live faithfully for the Lord, no matter what others may say.
