Daily Devotional: Wanting the Best for Others
"Let nothing be done through selfish ambition or conceit, but in lowliness of mind let each esteem others better than himself." - Philippians 2:3
One of the marks of Christian maturity is a genuine desire to see others grow. The world teaches competition, comparison, and self-promotion, but Christ teaches encouragement, service, and love.
When we care about our brethren, we should want to see them succeed in their walk with God. We should desire for them to grow in knowledge, strengthen their faith, overcome weaknesses, and become effective servants in God's kingdom. Rather than feeling threatened by another person's growth, we should rejoice in it.
This kind of attitude requires humility. Pride asks, "How do I compare to them?" Love asks, "How can I help them become all that God wants them to be?" A heart that is centered on Christ finds joy in helping others excel, because it understands that every believer's growth strengthens the body of Christ.
Encouraging others does not always mean offering praise. Sometimes it means teaching, correcting, mentoring, or challenging one another in love. Our goal should never be to elevate ourselves, but to help one another move closer to Christ.
As Christians, we should be known as people who build others up rather than tear them down, who celebrate growth rather than resent it, and who sincerely desire the spiritual well-being of our brethren.
We can ask ourself:
Do I genuinely rejoice when others grow and succeed, or do I struggle with comparison and competition?
Look for one opportunity today to encourage someone in their walk with God. Help them take one step closer to Christ through your words, actions, or example.
Biblical love is not merely wanting people to feel good...it is wanting them to become the best servants of Christ they can be.

In practical terms, I try to look for opportunities to invite open conversations about faith challenges or share resources that have helped me. Small acts like praying for someone or sharing a thoughtful scripture can be powerful ways to help others take steps closer to Christ. In our daily walk, practicing this kind of love demands intentionality. It requires a mindset shift from comparison to collaboration. But the rewards are profound: a strengthened community where each member’s gifts and growth contribute to the whole. Ultimately, biblical love means desiring the best for others—not just comfort, but becoming the best servants for Christ they can be. This journey is ongoing, but every act of encouragement brings us closer to fulfilling God’s purpose for us together.
