Daily Devotional: The Courage to Be Different
"And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God." - Romans 12:2
It takes very little courage to follow the crowd. The world has a way of pressuring us to blend in, stay quiet, and adopt its values. Yet God has never called His people to fit comfortably into the culture around them. He has called them to be set apart.
Throughout Scripture, those who faithfully followed God often looked different from everyone else. Noah built an ark when no one else believed judgment was coming. Daniel prayed when it was forbidden. Esther risked her life to stand for her people. The apostles preached Christ despite persecution. Their courage was not found in being naturally bold...it was found in trusting God more than they feared people.
As Christians, we may sometimes feel out of place. Choosing purity in a compromising culture, speaking truth when it is unpopular, extending forgiveness when others seek revenge, or standing firm in biblical convictions may cause us to stand apart. Yet our goal was never to be accepted by the world; it is to be faithful to Christ.
Romans 12:2 reminds us that God does not want us molded by the patterns of this world. Instead, He transforms us from the inside out as our minds are renewed by His Word.
The courage to be different is not about drawing attention to ourselves. It is about reflecting Christ so clearly that others can see there is something different about the One we follow.
When the pressure to conform comes, remember that standing with God is always better than fitting in with the crowd.
