Working on the 2yo
Cows got out, Boon got to act 👌
Working with a 2-year-old horse can be both challenging and rewarding. At this age, the horse is still young and developing, so patience and consistency are key. One important aspect of handling a 2-year-old is exposure to various real-life situations that build their confidence and responsiveness. For example, in situations where unexpected events occur, like cows getting loose nearby, it’s essential that the horse and handler stay calm and take control. In my experience, when cows get out and cause a bit of chaos, having the ability to act quickly and confidently with your horse is crucial. It not only helps you manage the situation but also reinforces trust and respect between you and your horse. Using calm but assertive commands and guiding your horse through the disturbance helps build a solid foundation for future training. Additionally, regular groundwork exercises focusing on leading, yielding, and desensitization can prepare your 2-year-old for various farm or trail environments. This not only improves their behavior but also ensures safety for both the horse and the handler. Remember, every horse is unique—so adapting your approach based on your horse’s personality will yield the best results. Working through challenges together, such as managing distractions like wandering cows, creates a stronger bond and a well-mannered, confident young horse.
