McCloud River - Middle Falls, swim hole
2024/12/6 Edited to

... Read moreThinking about visiting the majestic McCloud River Falls? I recently made the trip, and let me tell you, it's absolutely worth it! If you're searching for specific directions or wondering what to expect from the hike, I've got you covered with my personal experience and tips. First things first: getting there. The McCloud River Falls are located near the town of McCloud in Northern California. To find the trailhead for the main falls, you'll typically want to head towards McCloud, California, and then look for signs for F.S. Road 25 (also known as McCloud River Loop Road). I found that using a GPS navigation system and searching for "McCloud River Falls Trailhead" generally leads you right to the parking areas. There are actually two main parking areas – one for the Lower Falls and one near the Middle Falls, which is a great starting point for seeing all three. From the main road (Hwy 89), you'll turn onto F.S. Road 25. Continue on this road, and you'll soon see signs pointing to the different falls. Parking can fill up on busy weekends, so an early start is always a good idea! Once you're there, the hike itself is relatively easy and incredibly rewarding. The McCloud River features three distinct waterfalls: the Upper, Middle, and Lower Falls. Many people start at the Middle Falls, which is arguably the most spectacular and has a large swimming hole at its base – perfect for a refreshing dip on a warm day! The trail connecting the falls is well-maintained and mostly flat, making it suitable for families and hikers of all skill levels. It's about a 3.8-mile round trip if you walk between all three falls, so plan for a leisurely pace with plenty of photo stops. I started at the Middle Falls trailhead and walked downstream to the Lower Falls first. The Lower Falls are smaller but still beautiful, with a wider, cascading flow. Then, I headed back past the Middle Falls and continued upstream to the Upper Falls. The Upper Falls are characterized by a powerful, narrow plunge into a deep pool. Each waterfall has its own unique charm, and seeing all three really gives you a sense of the river's power and beauty. The trail itself winds through a lush forest, offering stunning views of the river and plenty of shaded spots. My top tip for visiting is to bring plenty of water, snacks, and a camera! The natural beauty here is unmatched. Also, wear comfortable shoes, as even though the trail is easy, you'll be doing a fair bit of walking. And if you're brave enough, don't forget your swimsuit for a dip in the Middle Falls. It was an absolutely unforgettable day of hiking and connecting with nature. The sound of the rushing water and the vibrant greenery really make you feel like you've escaped into a peaceful paradise. You won't regret making the journey to McCloud River Falls!
