Canberra Sec students embrace the outdoors @Republic Poly
👣 Stepping out of their comfort zones and into the great outdoors! 💪
Sec 3 Canberra Secondary students recently embarked on a beginner-friendly Applied Learning Module (ApLM) at Republic Poly - ‘Learning through Outdoor Activities.’ 🧗🏻♂️🚣
Through hands-on experiences, they’ll discover 🔍 what it takes to become effective outdoor activity leaders — building confidence 💪🏽 as they learn to plan, organise and lead adventure-based learning experiences for others.

Participating in outdoor leadership modules like the one offered at Republic Poly is an excellent way for students to enhance both their physical and interpersonal skills. From my experience, engaging in activities such as climbing, kayaking, orienteering, and team challenges not only promotes physical fitness but also encourages resilience, problem-solving, and teamwork. One key aspect of these programs is learning by doing—students step out of their comfort zones to face challenges like "scaling heights" or "overcoming obstacles with great support," as highlighted in the program's theme. This hands-on approach helps them develop important leadership qualities such as decision-making, effective communication, and responsibility for others. Moreover, outdoor learning fosters a deeper appreciation for nature, encouraging environmental stewardship. As students organize and lead these activities, they build confidence that extends beyond the outdoors into their academic and personal lives. Incorporating these experiences early helps students prepare for future leadership roles and boosts their self-esteem. It’s also a fun and engaging way to apply classroom knowledge in practical settings, making learning more meaningful.
