Why do many athletes drink beet juice?

Studies have suggested that inorganic nitrates may enhance performance by increasing vasodilation and glucose uptake while reducing blood pressure (Peeling et al, 2018). Consumption of nitrate salts can cause the production of harmful nitrogenous compounds. This is why researchers turned towards natural nitrates may-rich foods such as beetroot juice and powders (Wylie et al, 2013).

Consumption of nitrates has been recommended before, after, or during long endurance exercise.

Although uncontrolled high doses of nitrate salts can be harmful to health, natural sources can promote health (Raymond et al., n.d.). So go eat your spinach, lettuce, celery, and of course beets!
