Quilt for a Cure

This quilt is for a lovely lady whom I connected with on TikTok in 2020. Just recently she has celebrated her 1 year anniversary of being breast cancer free. I included “QUILT FOR A CURE” fabric which I had from years ago. (I think 20+ years ago.) Some of you may remember that Beth Hayes, former Editor in Chief of McCall’s Quilting Magazine, is a breast cancer survivor. QUILT FOR A CURE put out a line of fabric to draw awareness for the cause of advancing breast cancer research. A portion of the proceeds went towards funding research. The heart blocks are from a block swap I participated in way back in 2001/2002. These swapped blocks are very challenging to work with simply because different brands of rulers aren’t always exact in measurements. Nonetheless, I wanted them to work. I thought these heart blocks would look great with some batiks from 10” fabric layer cakes with a turquoise hue. I’m excited to get this all quilted up, put the binding on, and send this to my beautiful friend. I hope you enjoy this minute of combined video clips I documented as I made this quilt. #quiltforacure #quilt #quilting

... Read moreCreating a quilt dedicated to breast cancer survivors not only involves artistry but also a profound emotional journey. I recall making similar quilts where each fabric choice carried symbolic meaning, often sourced from lines like the 'QUILT FOR A CURE' that contribute funds toward research. From my experience, working with older swapped quilt blocks can be quite a challenge due to inconsistencies in measurements caused by different rulers or fabric cuts. Patience and determination become essential to harmonize these pieces into a cohesive design. Choosing batiks with hues of turquoise, as done here, adds a soothing yet vibrant touch that complements the heart blocks beautifully. Beyond the technical aspects, the greatest reward comes from the connection this craft fosters. Sending a finished quilt to someone celebrating their breast cancer victory is deeply gratifying. It becomes a tangible symbol of support, hope, and community. I find that documenting the quilting process, whether through video clips or photos, is a wonderful way to preserve these memories and inspire others. If you're considering making a quilt for a cause, I recommend exploring fabric lines dedicated to awareness campaigns; they bring rich stories behind every yard. Participating in block swaps is also a fantastic way to collect unique patterns while connecting with fellow quilters. Ultimately, quilting for a cure is more than a craft—it's a heartfelt tribute that uplifts survivors and raises awareness for vital research efforts.

Adding Interfacing to Back of a Quilt. Worth it?
So you might have noticed my quilt is more stiff than normal or that there was some kind of backing on it before I quilted it. I backed my quilt in fusible interfacing. Since this is a wall hanging, I wanted it to be stiffer. I also didnt want this quilt to be puffy or have a quilt crinkle. The int

1st rag quilt of 2026
technically, my first rag quilt ever! this was for my 6 year old daughter, and now I have been enlisted to make 4 more! I love the craziness of a rag quilt. it was not made with precise cuts and I broke a ton of sewing rules... but I think that's what made this so unique and pretty! #sewin
