my thoughts on antidepressants, after 3 degrees

2025/2/17 Edited to

... Read moreHey everyone! It's Reb, and I'm so glad you're here in this safe space to talk about something really important: antidepressants and our mental health journeys. My original post was just a little whisper, but after seeing what you're all searching for, I realized there's so much more we can explore together. Having spent years diving deep into psychology with my three degrees, and also navigating my own mental health path, I’ve gained a unique perspective on these medications. It’s a complex topic, and my goal here is to share some insights that might help you feel more informed and less alone. First off, let's clarify: what exactly are antidepressants used for? They are medications primarily prescribed to alleviate symptoms of depression, anxiety disorders, OCD, PTSD, and sometimes chronic pain. It’s not about changing who YOURSELF are, but rather helping your BRAIN chemistry find a better balance so you can cope and thrive. Many people think taking antidepressants means you've "failed" or can't handle things on YOUR own, but that's simply not true. It means you're courageous enough to ADMIT you need a little extra HELP, and that’s a powerful step. When it comes to finding the "best medicine for depression and anxiety," it's truly not a one-size-fits-all answer. What works wonders for one person might not AFFECT another the same way. It's a journey of collaboration with your doctor, often involving trying different types like SSRIs, SNRIs, or even less common ones like Bupropion (which many of you are asking about!). Patience is key, as it can take weeks to feel the full effects. Now, let's talk about the elephant in the room for many: side effects. These are real, and it's important to be aware without being scared. For those wondering about "serotonin syndrome symptoms," this is a serious but rare reaction, usually when serotonin levels become too high. Look out for symptoms like agitation, confusion, rapid heart rate, high blood pressure, dilated pupils, muscle rigidity, and twitching (yes, like "mirtazapine twitching" some of you mentioned, though that can also be a standalone side effect). If you suspect it, seek immediate medical attention. Another common concern is how mental health medication can impact your sex life, often searched as "sex anti anxiety" or "bupropion libido." Many antidepressants, especially SSRIs, can lead to decreased libido, difficulty with arousal, or delayed orgasm. Bupropion is often cited as having fewer sexual side effects, and sometimes even helps with libido, which is why it gets attention on forums like Reddit. It's crucial to discuss these concerns openly with your doctor; there are strategies, like dose adjustments or switching medications, that can HELP. Don't suffer in silence! You deserve a full and healthy life. Some people may also experience increased IRRITABILITY as a side effect when starting or adjusting doses, which can be tough. Remember, these are changes in your BRAIN chemistry, and while challenging, they are often manageable. Be mindful of interactions, especially with herbal supplements. For example, "Rhodiola Rosea drug interactions" are a valid concern. Rhodiola can potentially interact with antidepressants, especially MAOIs, and sometimes even SSRIs, by increasing serotonin levels, which could heighten the risk of serotonin syndrome. Always, always tell your doctor about all supplements you're taking. Finally, "coming off anti anxiety medication" or any antidepressant needs to be done carefully and under medical supervision. It's not as simple as just stopping. Tapering slowly helps your BRAIN adjust and minimizes withdrawal symptoms, which can include dizziness, nausea, fatigue, and mood swings. This process can be challenging, but with the right support, it's absolutely manageable. Remember, taking ANTIDEPRESSANTS doesn't define you. It's a tool, a part of your journey, and something that can truly HELP you reclaim YOURSELF. Be kind to YOURSELF, seek professional advice, and know that you’re not alone on this path. We're all in this together, striving for better mental wellbeing.

Needing antidepressants for an imbalance in the brain is just like a diabetic needing insulin for a sugar level imbalance. Sometimes your body needs help regulating, there is no shame in that!

Would you ever go on antidepressants?
I am for the most part very anti-SSRI. I think a lot of of these medications are Band-Aid solutions to very treatable conditions. A lot of people are given SSRI by their doctor before addressing nutrition, environment, nutrient deficiencies, relationships, work stress, and social media. Even
