Seasonal depression self care

Living in New England is beautiful, as we are lucky enough to enjoy 4 seasons. Although the appeal of jumping in the ocean year round is enticing, I wouldn’t want to give up fall, winter and spring to do so.

After the first snow fall, you look out the window to an untouched white blanket of bliss, in cozy sweats and fuzzy socks, with the feeling of utter joy upon the anticipation that work could be cancelled. It’s a magical feeling that only lasts so long for me. Because around the corner is a state of depression & darkness that seems to always find it’s way to me this season. So I call it hibernation.

As much as I attempt to romanticize winter, and stay present- I long for a change of season, and to be awakened from hibernation. I try to practice and be in tune with self care to ease my soul this time of year. Here’s some ways I recharge!

Baths.

It’s a calming space for me. Huge coping mechanism. And simply just relaxing. Does anyone remember when you were a kid thinking baths are for little kids only? I have vivid memories of kids at school talking about this and just feeling sad because I loved them! - well as an adult nothing has changed and I will hype up a bath to anyone. I highly recommend reading Ritual Baths by Deborah Hanekamp. This was a gifted to me this year by a close friend, and I’m so thankful because the author is so detailed and very real. I always bathed in various remedies. But this book guides you through so many different options- all with intention and healing properties!

My bath today was epsom salt, Himalayan salt, bentonite clay, apple cider vinegar, topped off with rose petals, surrounded with a clear quarts crystal, 3 white candles, and a little red waterproof light for just for a relaxing effect (this light is not strong enough for any other red light therapy uses)

I sat in the bath for an hour. Longer than usual but very worth it.

For soothing background noise I love hertz frequencies. Often I find myself leaning towards this 777 hz angelic frequency playlist on Spotify- shout-out to whoever created it because it is my go to for so many activities!!

Next, I slathered on a bentonite clay/ACV face mask right before getting in. This leaves my skin so soft, clears my pores out, and never causes any acne.

Once in the bath I start with breath work, until I am in a deep enough relaxation to mediate. I am new to mediation, only have been doing it for about one year. I can usually mediate for 10-20 mins max- I couldn’t even sit still for 2 minutes the start of last year so this is a really good amount of time for me! Today I just had the playlist on, but I use superhuman guided meditations/pep talks very frequently!

Once the face mask is dry and my skin is tingling to the point where I can’t take it anymore, I stop meditating.

I drink a full glass of cold water to stay hydrated while soaking.

The remainder of the bath I journal on my notes app. I use the notes app more than any other app. I keep track of everything there! It’s also perfect for journaling in a bath because I’m not careful enough to use a notebook. I journal whatever is on my mind. Why am I stressed? What am I thinking about? Just to try to wrap my head around why I’m feeling the way I am.

Then I write out my lists! In a slump I try to make a list of things to do. What will bring me Immediate happiness that day (attainable within reason). What is a mini goal I can achieve that day. And What is my big goal I can achieve that day.

This allows me to feel accomplished, and pushes me to get up and do something. When I get in a depressed state doing simple, everyday tasks are daunting as hell, and I will stay in bed and not move… and yes washing my hair is truly an evil I cannot explain! I despise wet hair, and the steps around washing my hair can be a lot. So I just don’t, and then I push it off to the point where it really shouldn’t pushed anymore. Not healthy. Not a good habit. But very much my reality during winter hibernation.

Winter is tough, but this self soothing ritual gives me a little boost. Please note that by no means am I a professional, these are just my personal tips and tricks to help during this season.

If you relate drop a comment! Hibernation season can feel so lonely, so it’s nice to chat with people who can relate 🌜

Establishing a self-care routine can provide much-needed comfort and affirmation during these times. Incorporating activities such as soothing baths enriched with natural remedies—like Epsom salts and bentonite clay—can enhance relaxation and promote better skin health. Breathing exercises and meditation can also help in reducing anxiety and improving mental clarity. Listening to calming frequencies, such as the popular 777 Hz angelic frequency, can set a peaceful ambiance that eases stress. Keeping a self-care journal allows you to track your feelings and make achievable daily goals, providing a sense of direction and accomplishment. By creating a nurturing environment and following a structured routine, you can effectively manage the emotional challenges associated with seasonal depression. Remember that you are not alone; many individuals share these experiences and seek support in various forms. Reaching out for community support during these challenging times can provide comfort and connection.
