ODAAT: Day Four After

✨ check out my previous post for the before ✨

I can’t help but feel like these areas that are cluttered and dusty and neglected are somewhat symbolic. Maybe I’m reading too much into this but there has to be some type of psychological connection between the spaces that are a mess and my lack of acknowledgement or upkeep.

I say this because every time I finish a space, big or small, I feel a piece of myself unlocking or something. Yes there’s satisfaction and contentment and a sense of accomplishment… but there’s something else too. The space is cleaner so I feel lighter? Is it the burden of the impending being released? Is it an increase of self-worth for accomplishing a task I’ve been putting off for literal months? Pride?

I don’t know. But I’m feeling more in control everyday I do this… experiment? Shift? Right now I have a lot more questions than answers but it feels so good finally asking these questions.

Each session of cleaning a messy area not only brings order but also shines a light on deeper feelings of self-acceptance and accomplishment. Psychology highlights how our environment impacts our mental state, suggesting that messy spaces can symbolize areas in our lives where we might feel overwhelmed or stagnant. Engaging with these feelings, like asking ourselves why we let certain spaces become cluttered, offers a unique opportunity for introspection and growth. Adopting a 'one day at a time' (ODAAT) mindset encourages individuals to tackle these messes gradually, instead of feeling daunted by the enormity of the task. Reflecting on the feelings of lightness and control that follow each cleaning session can be a powerful motivator. This practice also aligns with the growth mindset philosophy, which emphasizes learning and resilience amidst challenges. Therefore, each small step can lead to greater self-discovery and enjoyment in maintaining our environments. Adopting this iterative process of question and answer is beneficial, guiding us toward understanding the psychological connections between our spaces and our personal journeys.
