Why I’m not interested in “Medfluencing”
Because I am in medical school, I know it can be easy to assume that I want to be social media’s next “medfluencer,” but that isn’t the case! While I respect the people that exist in this niche and follow some of them on their own healthcare journeys, I don’t think this niche will be for me, and here’s why:
I am just a student like everyone else, and while I can speak to my own experience with getting in and the curriculum I’m taking on now as an incoming second year, I don’t trust that my experience provides any unique insight outside what’s already available online from prep websites and other medfluencers already in the space! Plus, anything different to my experience doesn’t necessarily equip me as an advisor to provide thoughtful insight outside of my individual experience. I don’t feel equipped to provide adequate insight and advice to pre-medical students, and I wouldn’t feel right attempting to just because my niche is “built in” to my role as a medical student! With medical school applications and curriculum constantly evolving to improve, I would also hate to provide old information and lead individuals down the wrong path.
I want to use my socials to cultivate positivity and share bits and pieces of my life, and some of that will inevitably include medical school since it is such a large part of my life, but my intention is never going to be centering my posts and account around medical school, whether that be advice, memes, or showboating any scores.
While I might share a day in the life that includes me going to class or studying, or I share my accomplishments out of excitement for getting a score that I want to celebrate, my intention will never be to brand myself as a medfluencer or create a space where I am doing more than sharing my life by giving advice I don’t feel like I can give!

Medfluencers often share health advice, personal stories from medical school, and insights about the healthcare industry. While this can provide value to followers seeking guidance, it's vital to consider the implications of presenting oneself as an authority in a field that continuously evolves. Medical students, in particular, may feel pressure to participate in this trend, amplifying the voices of individuals who might not yet possess the comprehensive knowledge required to advise others. Acknowledging the differences in personal experiences and the ever-changing nature of medical education is crucial. Being part of the medical community means grappling with complex subjects that require years of study and experience. Thus, the wealth of information available through established sources can sometimes overshadow the insights shared by newer voices. However, engaging positively with social platforms can still be beneficial. Many medical students aim to create communities that inspire and educate without claiming to provide expert advice. Sharing day-to-day experiences, challenges, and achievements can foster a supportive network among peers, which can be immensely valuable during rigorous training. Ultimately, it's about creating a space that promotes authenticity and community rather than self-promotion. The aim should be meaningful connections over curated perceptions of medical life.
