Anyone else struggling with classes rn?

I definitely am, but that’s also because we’re studying cardio right now and there’s a disconnect somewhere along the way! Med school has been an ongoing adjustment that’s for sure 🫠

Even between first year and second year, and with 5 years of undergrad and grad school under my belt, so much has changed and keeps changing and I feel like I’m constantly adapting my habits to try to stay on top of things without losing my head!

The time lapse at least helped me keep my phone occupied so I didn’t feel like it was constantly there for me to interact with and get distracted by since it was helping ho me accountable!

How have you been adjusting to school, if you started? What’s something you didn’t expect?

... Read moreIt's so true how much we have to adapt our study methods, especially when you're jumping between vastly different subjects! I've been there, staring at complex diagrams or chemical structures, feeling completely overwhelmed. When I'm trying to master something visual, like understanding anatomical relationships – say, visualizing something like kyphosis, lordosis, or scoliosis – I've found that drawing them out myself, even if it's just a crude sketch, really helps. Flashcards with diagrams on one side and definitions on the other are a lifesaver. Actively explaining it to an empty room (or a pet!) also solidifies the concepts for me. Then there are those incredibly detailed topics like pharmacology, understanding a drug's chemical structure like furosemide, or diving deep into pharmacokinetics. For these, I break it down into smaller, digestible chunks. Instead of trying to memorize everything at once, I focus on the key functional groups, how they interact, and the 'why' behind the drug's action. Creating flowcharts for drug pathways or mechanisms of action can turn a daunting block of text into something much more manageable. I also try to connect it to clinical scenarios – how would knowing this help a patient? This makes it less abstract. When it comes to foundational knowledge, like what you might find in a 'nursing assistant care' textbook or 'health education and promotion' materials, I prioritize understanding the principles over rote memorization. Why are these care steps important? What's the underlying health goal? Active recall is my best friend here. After reviewing my PowerPoints or attending a lecture, I'll close my notes and try to explain the main points in my own words. If I can't, I know exactly what I need to revisit. And for those problem-solving oriented subjects, whether it's physics problems or understanding programming design principles, practice is non-negotiable. It's not enough just to read about 'top-down programming design' or 'CSS in pharmacokinetics'; you have to apply it. I try to work through as many practice questions as possible. If I get stuck, I don't just look up the answer; I try to find similar problems or break down the problem into smaller steps, just like they teach in programming. This helps build that muscle memory for problem-solving. I often set up 'STUDY WITH ME' sessions for myself, sometimes using a time-lapse like I mentioned, to tackle these diverse topics. It helps me stay accountable and ensures I dedicate focused time to each area. Waking up early to review before a class, like I did recently, or rewatching a lecture I struggled with, makes a huge difference. It's all about finding those personalized strategies that work for your brain and your learning style. It's definitely an ongoing process, but finding little wins along the way makes the struggle a bit more bearable. Keep experimenting with what works for you to make your study sessions successful!
