Mini sketchbook tour

After sharing my recent mini sketchbook tour, I realized just how much joy (and sometimes frustration!) comes with filling those tiny pages. I'm here to spill my secrets and share what I've learned, especially from my own journey, as you saw in my tour, where I started using a sketchbook I bought "forever ago"! First off, let's talk about how to make your sketchbook chunky. It's not about forcing it, but about embracing every page as a playground. Don't be afraid to fill every single inch! Even the drawings you don't love contribute to its thickness and tell a story of your artistic growth. I used to be so precious with my sketchbooks, but now I try to use both sides of the paper and experiment with different mediums. Sometimes I’ll start with a light pencil sketch, ink it, and then add color. Other times, I glue in small scraps, tickets, or even dried leaves to create mixed-media pages. Adding little notes, journaling entries, or thoughts alongside my drawings also helps fill up space and makes the sketchbook feel more personal and, well, chunky! When it comes to mini sketchbook painting ideas, I've had my ups and downs. As you heard in my tour, I tried watercolor and, honestly, I often "fucking hate watercolor!" My favorite way to start is often with simple doodles. Just letting my hand wander and create abstract shapes, patterns, or even zentangle-like designs helps loosen me up. That "whatever the f*** this is on a random page" drawing often comes from just letting my hand go! Quick life sketches are also perfect for a mini sketchbook – capture someone on the bus, a plant on your desk, or even just your own hand in a different pose. They don't need to be perfect; they're about observation and practice. Object studies, like drawing a simple cup or a houseplant from different angles, are great for honing your skills. You can also practice lettering for quotes, or quickly sketch character concepts and facial expressions. Elements from nature, like leaves, feathers, or rocks (like my "dead one" "tree" drawing), are always inspiring. The key is to embrace imperfection and remember that your sketchbook is a safe space for experimentation, not a portfolio. Just start doodling, drawing, or painting, and watch your mini sketchbook become a treasured, chunky collection of your creative journey.
