Starting solids is an exciting milestone for both parents and babies, but it can also feel a bit overwhelming. From my personal experience, following a gradual, developmental approach to introducing solid foods helped my baby enjoy mealtimes and build essential eating skills safely. At 6 months, babies typically develop the palmar grasp and can sit with support. Offering soft strips of foods like sweet potato, avocado, or steamed broccoli allowed my baby to self-feed while minimizing choking risks. I avoided small pieces until I was sure my baby could handle them safely. By 7 months, babies enter the "rake phase" where they begin raking food with their fingers and improve sitting balance. Introducing slightly more resistant textures like ground chicken or soft pasta gave my baby the perfect challenge for motor skills growth. At 8 months, babies can transfer food between hands and chew with their gums effectively. This stage is ideal for mashed or shredded variety in textures. Purees can still be offered but are often less preferred. When babies reach 9 to 11 months, their independence flourishes. My baby started using hands confidently and tried utensils with help. Most family foods can be introduced with texture modifications and by cutting foods into small pieces. Avoiding hard, round, or sticky items like whole grapes or popcorn is critical to prevent choking hazards. By 12 months, toddlers may even walk and show clear food preferences. It’s important to continue offering varied foods, including yogurt, rice, fish, and moderate salt in meals. Honey can be safely introduced at this stage as well. Throughout this process, I closely watched for developmental red flags such as difficulty sitting with support at 6 months, refusal of textured foods at 8 months, or lack of self-feeding attempts by 10 months. Consulting a pediatrician if these signs appear helped ensure timely support. Using apps and tracking introductions of allergens carefully was also helpful in monitoring reactions and expanding the diet safely. This structured yet flexible approach made starting solids a positive bonding experience and set a strong foundation for healthy eating habits.
