Winter Gardening: Leafy Greens

I got seed mail!

You guys, remember your Leafy Greens (Lettuce, Kale, 🥬 Arugula, etc.) chives, and carrots, can all be started inside NOW where it’s warm, under grow lights— and can be transplanted outside after you slowly acclimate them to the cold and wind over time— they do very well in frost and a good snow / heavy frost makes them taste SWEET and fights bitterness. They can all be grown in containers, too.

You CAN garden in the winter! 🙂

All of these plants would otherwise bolt in the heat of summer and could become bitter/ have slow growth.

Carrots and leafy greens are flowering plants, and the heat tells them to flower. 🙂

October is also the time to plant flower bulbs & onions + garlic 🧄 for a spring & summer/early fall harvest for next year. #wintergardening #growagarden #growyourowngarden #gardening #garden

... Read moreWinter gardening can be a rewarding experience, especially when growing leafy greens such as kale, lettuce, and arugula. These plants thrive in colder conditions and can often taste sweeter after exposure to frost, which reduces their bitterness. In addition to leafy greens, consider incorporating Chinese winter choy for a unique twist to your winter yields. Starting your seeds indoors under grow lights allows for a controlled environment, ensuring that your plants have the warmth they need to germinate. Once they’ve matured, gradually acclimate them to outdoor conditions to help them adapt to temperature fluctuations. Fertile soil and appropriate watering techniques are crucial for ensuring healthy growth. Moreover, October is an ideal time to plant garlic and various flower bulbs. This process not only prepares your garden for an enchanting spring bloom but also sets the stage for early summer vegetable harvests. Grow bulbs like daffodils alongside your leafy greens for a vibrant garden display. Remember to use containers for smaller spaces; they can house several plants and bring life to patios or balconies. Happy gardening!
