Ruthless Vows Book Review

I didn’t love this one like I did Divine Rivals, I felt like she could’ve done more with the plot. Specifically, Roman when he’s with Dacre, and Envas story/ background overall, but either way, this duology will always hold a special place in my heart for getting me into fantasy reads.

I do have a good bit of complaints for a specific part in this story (mentioned in the last slide), but I don’t don’t want to spoil anything so I won’t put anything here.

Ending made me cry and I’m glad I read this book!

... Read moreAs a huge fantasy romance fan, one of the first questions I always have before diving into a new book, especially a sequel like 'Ruthless Vows,' is about the 'spice level.' We all have our preferences, and knowing what to expect can really shape the reading experience. After finishing Rebecca Ross's 'Ruthless Vows,' I definitely have some insights to share on this front, especially for those who loved 'Divine Rivals' and are curious about its follow-up. First off, let's clarify what 'spice' often means in fantasy romance. It typically refers to the explicit or sensual scenes that depict physical intimacy between characters. In 'Ruthless Vows,' the romance between Iris Winnow and Roman Carver is undeniably central to the story, much like in 'Divine Rivals.' Their connection is deep, emotional, and beautifully developed. You witness their bond grow through shared struggles, tender moments, and profound understanding. The book excels at building emotional intimacy, which for me, is just as important as any physical aspect. However, if you're specifically looking for explicit scenes, 'Ruthless Vows' leans more towards a fade-to-black or emotionally charged intimacy rather than detailed, graphic descriptions. The romantic tension is palpable, and there are certainly moments of intense passion and affection between Iris and Roman. These scenes are handled with care, focusing on the emotional weight and the deepening of their relationship rather than overtly dwelling on physical details. It's more about the longing glances, the comforting touches, and the profound connection that binds them. Comparing it to 'Divine Rivals,' I found the romantic pacing and depiction of intimacy to be quite consistent. Both books prioritize the emotional journey and the high stakes of the world over extended explicit scenes. This isn't to say there's no spice, but it's not the kind of book where the plot pauses for lengthy, detailed romantic encounters. The romance serves to enhance the narrative, adding a layer of personal stakes and emotional depth to the overarching conflict. Their love story is a beacon of hope and strength amidst the chaos of war, and Rebecca Ross truly makes you feel their connection. For readers who appreciate a strong, character-driven romance with a focus on emotional intimacy, powerful declarations of love, and a satisfying slow-burn payoff, 'Ruthless Vows' will absolutely deliver. The love story between Iris and Roman is compelling and heartfelt, making you root for them every step of the way. If you're a fan of fantasy where the plot and character development take precedence, and romantic scenes are more suggestive and emotionally resonant than explicit, you'll likely find the level of romance in 'Ruthless Vows' to be perfectly fitting and deeply moving. It's a romance that makes your heart ache and soar, contributing beautifully to the overall impact of the story.
