I want to write a fantasy story!!!

That moment when you have all these ideas for a fantasy story but you’re a terrible writer….

This story is all I can think about and everyday I have new ideas to add to it and build my world up, but I am just an AWFUL writer.

I know they say just start typing, and that your first draft will always be awful. But even as I sit down and start trying to put things together I’m stuck on the first paragraph.

And as I’m reading fourth wing right now (ik ik you’re not supposed to compare to others) I can help but stop and think- how tf am I supposed to come up with ALLLLLL of these intricate little things and conversations.

I so badly want to write this story and I really do think it’s somewhat good and a cool concept but I am struggling so hard. It just makes me feel like there’s not even a point to trying…

... Read moreI totally get how you feel! Having incredible fantasy ideas swirling in your head, only to be paralyzed by the blank page, is a universal writer's dilemma. That pressure to create something as intricate as 'Fourth Wing' right from the start? Been there, felt that. It's so easy to fall into the trap of thinking every word needs to be perfect from the get-go, especially when you're dreaming up vast, complex fantasy worlds. Here’s a secret I wish I’d known earlier: every single author you admire, even the ones whose worlds feel so real you could live in them, started somewhere. Their first drafts were probably just as 'awful' as ours often feel. The magic isn't in writing perfectly the first time; it's in showing up and getting words down, knowing that editing is where the real crafting happens. Don't let the fear of a messy first draft stop your amazing fantasy story from ever existing. Getting past that dreaded first paragraph is often about lowering your expectations for it. Don't try to craft a masterpiece; just tell yourself the story. My best advice for breaking through? The 'Ugly First Draft' approach. Just dump everything out. Don't worry about grammar, pacing, or even if it makes sense. The goal is simply to get the core story, your characters, and their journey onto the page. Once you have a rough skeleton, you can go back and flesh it out, polish it, and make it shine. You mentioned intricate details and conversations. Instead of trying to build an entire world before you write a single scene, try a 'just-in-time' approach. What does your character need to know or interact with in this specific moment? Build out from there. Journaling can be a fantastic tool here – it's a low-pressure way to create character profiles, map out key locations, or even just jot down dialogue ideas. It's less daunting than formal outlining and can help you develop those 'intricate little things' organically. Dealing with comparison is probably one of the toughest parts of any creative endeavor. Comparing your raw, unpolished draft to a finished, professionally edited novel is like comparing a caterpillar to a butterfly. They're both beautiful in their own stages, but one isn't meant to be the other. Your unique voice and perspective are what make your story special. Embrace your vision, not someone else's. Remember, every fantasy writer brings their own magic to the page, and yours is waiting to be unleashed. Finally, make it a habit, however small. Even 15-30 minutes a day can make a huge difference. Set small, achievable goals. Maybe today you just write 100 words, or describe one new creature, or outline a single scene. Consistency beats intensity when it comes to writing a novel. Don't let the feeling of 'no point in trying' win. Your story deserves to be told, and you are capable of telling it. Keep pushing, keep learning, and celebrate every single word you put down. We're all on this journey together!
