I remember a time when I felt so deeply wronged, my first instinct was to 'pay them back.' It’s a natural human reaction, isn't it? That burning desire for justice, or maybe even a little bit of revenge. But then I stumbled upon Proverbs 20:22: 'Do not say I’ll pay you back for this wrong. Wait for the Lord, and he will avenge you.' This verse truly hit different for me, and it quickly became a cornerstone of my spiritual journey. What does Proverbs 20:22 really mean? It’s a powerful reminder that we don't have to carry the burden of seeking retribution. Instead, we're called to surrender that desire to God. It means trusting that there’s a divine justice system at play, far beyond our capacity to fully understand or execute. The image I saw perfectly captured this feeling: 'As bad as you want to address it, sometimes it's best to let God defend you. He saw too.' That last part, 'He saw too,' is what resonates most with me. It’s comforting to know that God isn't oblivious to our pain or to the injustices we face. He truly sees every single detail, every tear, every wrong committed against us. Thinking about 'god saw it too' changes everything. It shifts our focus from our own limited ability to exact revenge to God’s boundless power and perfect timing. When you feel that urge to retaliate, pause and remember that the Lord is not just a passive observer. He is an active defender of His children. Waiting for the Lord doesn't mean being weak or letting people walk all over you; it means choosing faith over flesh, peace over bitterness. It’s an act of profound trust. Now, some of you might be thinking, what about other verses that talk about treating enemies? This brings me to another set of powerful scriptures often searched alongside this one: Proverbs 25:21-22. These verses say, 'If your enemy is hungry, give him food to eat; if he is thirsty, give him water to drink. In doing this, you will heap burning coals on his head, and the Lord will reward you.' At first glance, this might seem contradictory to Proverbs 20:22, but they actually work hand-in-hand. While Proverbs 20:22 calls us to not seek revenge, Proverbs 25:21-22 encourages us to actively show kindness to those who wrong us. It’s not about manipulating them or getting them to feel guilty; it’s about choosing a higher path of love and compassion, which ultimately allows God to work in the situation, whether through their heart or through His divine justice. So, how do we apply this in our daily lives? It's about consciously choosing to forgive, to release the pain, and to trust that God is bigger than any wrong done to us. It's a journey, not a destination, but one that leads to incredible freedom and peace. When you feel hurt, remember: you don't need to 'pay them back.' God saw it, He will defend you, and He will avenge you in His perfect way and time. Let's lean into that trust together.
